The United Nations (UN) is facing its worst cash crisis in nearly a decade because almost one-third of its member states have not paid their annual dues, according to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Speaking in front of the UNs budget-setting Fifth Committee on Tuesday, Guterres said the situation was so desperate that last months General Assembly in New York was only possible because of emergency spending cuts made earlier in the year.
The organization is facing a severe financial crisis, Guterres said.
To be more specific, a severe liquidity crisis. The equation is simple: without cash, the budget cannot be properly implemented.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement published Tuesday that, by the end of September, member states had paid only 70% of the total assessment for the regular budget.
Vacant posts cannot be filled, travel will be limited to essential travel only, meetings may have to be canceled or deferred.
Guterres also warned that the situation would not only impact operations in the main hubs of New York, Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi, but also regional commissions.

Well with the weight i gained through the years it is quite some effort if i change my mind!!!
Travel will be limited to essential travel only.
I wont make the obvious comment.
Perhaps they could offset some of their debt by selling chunks of it,just as they sold pieces of the Berlin Wall after they tore it down.
I suggest they move the UN to Caracas. They can save money and socialism at the same time. Win / Win!
correction to above
whether we tear it down
ME tear it down, US tear it down, WE tear it down, I don’t care about a type O, just tear it DOWN!!! It is time to end this abomination.
“I cant find anything good on TV to watch.”
I can’t either but I can ALWAYS find something BAD to NOT watch.
Why would that be a joke?
I have always expected that the UN would move to Babylon.
Gives them an idea of what its like to run a business. Maybe theyll learn how to manage money through this.
Good.
If they’re broke and can’t pay the rent, then turn out the lights; the party’s over. Let the freaks go back to, and pollute, their own countries.
If she ever cools down from not getting a Nobel Award this last week.
That’s the first time I’ve seen this little demons hand. It’s bony and creepy. Obviously she’s taken the oath with the Devil.
Yep, absolutely. I use to make food deliveries to those pigs and later on deliveries of spring water to them. They literally live like royalty, restaurant sized kitchens, servants, maids, butlers. They cost the city a fortune not to mention the insane traffic jams they cause every year and for what? They should push the UN into the east river and flush
Now we're getting somewhere!
Convert it to condos, name it Trump Un-Tower.
Funding the UN is illegal because it is unconstitutional. The people ahould not pay for non profits, let alone paragovernmental non profits not representing them.
Whenever I think of the UN, I wonder about other uses for the big building in Turtle Bay.
From what Ive read its in a sad state of repair. Needs to be dropped (imploded). Members take a one way flight to where they came from.
New York is expensive. They need to sell the NY building and relocate to someplace like Hanoi, Bogota, or Tripoli.
I hear South Sudan real estate is fairly inexpensive...
