Mother Cabrini float added to Columbus Day Parade in jab at de Blasio

“We’re a little upset that Mother Cabrini wasn’t included for a statue dedication,” the Diocese’s Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello told The Post.

“If the city won’t honor Mother Cabrini, we will will honor her.” ..."

"a group controlled by [Chirlane] McCray [New York mayor De Blasio's wife] passed over Cabrini in favor of seven other women.

Now she will be front and center at Manhattan’s Columbus Day Parade, with her float replacing one that typically promotes Catholic education.

It will be two or three car-lengths long and include 40 to 50 kids and adults — with more walking alongside it.

Brooklyn church honors Mother Cabrini since the city won’t

By Larry Celona, Khristina Narizhnaya and Jorge Fitz-Gibbon
October 6, 2019

More than 1,000 parishioners packed a Brooklyn church on Sunday to give Saint Frances Cabrini her dues — after the city passed her over for a statue, despite a groundswell of support.

The overflow crowd at Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary & St. Stephen church was the latest outcry from Catholics and Big Apple Italian-Americans after Cabrini was snubbed by First Lady Chirlane McCray’s “She Built NYC” statue program.

Cabrini, an Italian immigrant who founded 67 institutions to help the needy, finished first in a citywide poll asking who should get an effigy — but McCray and former Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen nonetheless decided not to grant her the honor. ..."

"That’s a disgrace,” said Connie Gessler, who said Cabrini taught her grandmother."

"Why did they have an election if they weren’t going to give one to the person with the most votes?" ..."

From her Wikipedia page...

Cabrini died of complications from dysentery at age 67 in Columbus Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, on December 22, 1917,[8] while preparing Christmas candy for the local children.

By that time, she had founded 67 missionary institutions to serve the sick and poor and train additional sisters to carry on the work.

I used to LOVE that parade when I worked at Rock Plaza.

My boss and good friend was also of Italian descent and also spoke Italian (though much better than myself) and visited 3 or 4 times a year.

We were the only conservatives in an office with about 50 workers.

We loved the parade.

Good for them for including this.

...watching our decline to match that of the last days of the Roman Empire...

The mayor’s wife diddles, as this church spurns!

“She Built NYC” statue program.

Aren’t some of the “women” honored men?

It’s a marvelous parish. My Dad went to SacredHeart/St. Stephen’s in the early Twentieth Century. A finer Catholic gentleman you would find nowhere.

Glad to see the parish is still strong and growing!I named one of my daughters Francesca, after the wonderful Mother Cabrini.

It’s a dying parade and most of the attendees and participants can’t vote in the city anyway. The gun hating NY Post is not worth consideration.

I recall in grade school we sang a hymn to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini and the words included “O Mother Cabrini”.

My Mom greatly admired her and the kitchen calendar always featured St. Cabrini. She was canonized in 1946 which at the time was considered a rapid process following her death in 1917.

I have always had devotion to her. I have a first class relic of her, blessed in Rome on her canonization day. She has interceded for my family for generations.

Italians are always the last to leave, though that refers mostly to the oldest generation. Italian neighborhoods still have many Italians but most of the kids or grand kids have gone suburban or out of the area altogether. But you are correct yhat most parade goers can’t vote in the city.

She has been my patron saint since I was a child, she passed on my birthday Dec. 22. Her feast day was later moved to November. What she accomplished in her life is an inspiration.

Good news story. I wasn’t very aware of Mother Cabrini but I am now.

The irony is that the Jewish population has grown rapidly in Brooklyn and the communities expanding as the other “white ethnics”
die off. High Orthodox birth rates (and not just the Hasidim) and commitment to the community ties are the reason. Gravesend in southern Brooklyn is a case in point. It was once ethnically and religiously mixed, and was an extension of Bensonhurst culturally. Now it is one of the wealthiest communities in the city and largely populated by Syrian Jews.
