California Gov. Gavin Newsom ‘outraged’ by PG&E blackouts, but says they’re needed

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday he’s “outraged” over Pacific Gas and Electric Co shut-offs, blaming decades of mismanagement at the utility.

He made the comments Wednesday morning, several hours after millions of Californians woke up without power amid massive blackouts that have stranded huge swaths of the state without electricity.

Given the potential danger posed by the utility’s power lines, Newsom said the blackouts are needed to keep

“I’m outraged because it didn’t have to happen,” Newsom told reporters at a news conference in San Diego. “They’re in bankruptcy due to their terrible management going back decades. They’ve created these conditions, it was unnecessary.”

Most of the outages are in the hills ringing the Sacramento Valley and the state’s wine country where Newsom, who made his fortune in the wine business, noted that his wineries are in the midst of grape crushing season and desperate for power.

“I’d rather criticize Donald Trump than act like him, talking about my businesses in Northern California, but we’re in the middle of wine crush and folks are running around trying to get generators right now,” he said. “It’s very consequential.”

You have a valid point. I would imagine every one of those affected with loss of power...will go and buy a generator. And there will be a fire started by one of these. Then the state will come to screw so much with that guy, that everyone sits in fear of their own generator starting a fire.

It will simply speed up the process of people to leave the state.

No mention of the lack of forest management.

My husband said this exact thing. He and all the other Cali politicians are glad the power was cut. It will have no affect on them or their friends.

I’m willing to bet that even if PGE wanted to trim some trees are vegetation so the power could stay on In a bad wind storm, the environmentalists would scream bloody murder that you might upset the family a field mice and prevent them from doing it.

California will once again be the poster child against deregulation of public utilities.

Deregulated? They are overregulated.

This is what is going to get Newsom recalled. Davis got recalled for high power bills, what are they going to do with no power for weeks?

Fine the hell out of them because they didn’t turn off the power, then fine the hell out of them because they did!

That’s the way to to do it!

They only notice when it affects them directly. What about other businesses? What about the hospitals... police... fire? What about the elderly on CPAP machines?

Who cares about your damn grapes?! ... besides you, of course.

I see your point. You would hope that the lines had been designed and maintained to survive typical winds. But perhaps they were too busy providing gender reassignment surgery to illegal immigrants. One consideration, a fire starts at a residence due to the power outage it is going to be right there in the residential area. If a power line breaks and starts one, maybe it is not.... No good options...

Just a guess, but in those areas where the power is off I would bet you can’t even buy a generator.
None of the point of sales stations, or checkouts will be working.

The 2 grocery stores here in our town keep the old cash register machines for our winter time and occasional summer time power outages.

The little town I live near in Trinity county runs off hydro power and the distribution lines run through some pretty deep forest; yes, even we have to do a LOT more tree cutting.
I’m at the end of the line and the TPUD right of way is on about 4 or 5 acres of my land, don’t like power outages and don’t like fire even more.

Have chain saw, will (already have) cut any and all trees that represent a danger.

I bet I could load up a trailer rig with 200 generators (buying for $1k each) and sell them off the back of the rig in the affected area for $1,500.

Within six months, I bet the state passes legislation to limit generator sales, and hinder the normal guy from getting one.

Aunt Nancy and Uncle Paul Pelosi probably have a solar generator and a backup windmill.

Newsome is also a racist if he talked about “blackouts”. That’s code for “black face”.

No, the state will screw with the company that made the generator -- not enough money in an individual.

The ultimate result will be that no one will sell generators in CA any longer.

CA is considering shutting off the water in flood prone regions this winter to prevent additional run off.
