President Donald Trump will make an 11th-hour trip to Louisiana to stump for Republican candidates who are attempting to unseat Gov. John Bel Edwards, the only Democratic governor in the Deep South.
The president plans to hold a rally in Lake Charles on Friday, alongside Republicans Eddie Rispone and Ralph Abraham.
"Keep Democrat Governor Edwards under 50%, force a runoff and have a great new Republican Governor," Trump tweeted Sunday, announcing his plan to visit Louisiana on the eve of Election Day.
The Louisiana Republican Party also tweeted about the news, along with an image of Trump altered to make it look like he was holding a sign that read "Dear John Bel Edwards, you're fired!"

If the pubbies ran either one of these two guys against edwards, the pubbie would win, hands down.
BUT with this run-off system, the pubbies will split the vote and edwards might sneak in with over 50% and avoid a run off vote.
“I hate these states that have “open” primaries.”
Louisiana does not have open primaries.

It won’t matter which Republican is voted for. Their combined totals detract from Edward’s percentage. He has to get 50 percent plus one to win.
The Louisiana system is designed for open seats to keep them Democrat. It doesn’t hurt when you have only one Democrat and multiple Republicans. It hurts when you have multiple Democrats and Republicans because the Dems run enough stalking horses to ensure the Dems get the top two spots. That’s why the mindset of the state almost always stays big government.

How long has Louisiana had this Jungle Primary Scheme?
Jungle primary started on Nov. 1, 1975.
Since well before it had post-Reconstruction Republicans in any meaningful numbers.
The South tends to require runoffs if candidates get less than 50% of the vote as a relic of the days when the Dems were all there were but the Dems were often split into factions. The system can still work well enough now that the states have gone largely Pub.
