Using the same logic the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (which Gabbard may have heard of) could be considered a retaliation against the extreme sanctions (we froze all Japanese assets in July, 1941) that basically made it impossible for them to buy oil around the world.

The old nuclear deterrence strategy (Mutually Assured Destruction —MAD) that worked so well during The Cold War won’t work with regimes ruled by psychotics and mad mullahs. Many seem to have a hard time grasping that reality.
