I saw a book by RFK, Jr., in a bookstore once and looked through it. He was convinced that George W. Bush had stolen the 2004 from Kerry by stealing Ohio's electoral votes. (Even though GWB had a 3 million vote margin over Kerry in the popular vote, if Kerry had taken Ohio he would have won...so much for the Democrats who want to abolish the electoral college.) The evidence? Apparently a couple of places in Ohio had long lines at the polling places...I don't think he offered any evidence that was the result of malfeasance by local Republican officials.

GWB's plurality in Ohio in 2004 was about the same as JFK's plurality in the entire country in 1960.

This is not like JFK. RFK was shot close up surrounded by many people. Some of the people were security, some reporters, some were campaign aides, and many were hotel workers. Even Rosie Grier was there to sit on Sirhan after the shooting. Sirhan did it, no question.

Illinois did not have enough electoral votes to change the outcome of the election, but there were reports of voter fraud in Texas. Together Texas and Illinois would have kept Kennedy below the number of electoral votes needed for victory. There were also 15 electoral votes cast for Sen. Harry F. Byrd of Virginia.

If Kennedy had picked Stuart Symington as he had planned to, LBJ might not have pulled strings to make sure Texas went for the ticket.

Whether Kennedy actually had a popular vote plurality depends, I think, on counting all of Alabama's Democrat votes as votes for Kennedy, although the electoral votes were split between Kennedy and Byrd. I don't know if there is a way to determine how many Alabama Democrats preferred Kennedy--or if anyone has ever tried to investigate the matter.
