The New York Times prides itself on being the national "newspaper of record" and still carries its longtime motto, "All the News That's Fit to Print" in the upper left-hand corner of its front page. If we are to believe the Times' motto, the week-long Holodomor commemoration didn't take place, or at least it didn't qualify as "news.".

The Times neglect of the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor is especially inexcusable, inasmuch as the Times served as an indispensable handmaiden to Stalin as he carried out this horrendous crime against humanity. While the communists carried out the mass annihilation of the Ukrainian farmers, the Times assured the Western world that all reports of starvation in Ukraine were merely anti-Soviet propaganda.
Times reporter Walter Duranty, known as "Stalin's Apologist," became a willing tool for the Kremlin and denounced as liars those heroic journalists who dared to report the truth — that Ukrainians were dying by the millions, their bodies filling the streets of many towns and villages.

Most people don’t even know about the war in Eastern Ukraine that started in 2014 and is technically ongoing. The death toll sits right now at about 13,000. (This includes Ukrainians and Russians.)

So true. And during that period Stalin and the Soviet system were being openly praised by singers Pete Seeger and Paul Robeson. And Hollywood types and writers fell all over themselves extolling Uncle Joe's virtues. Forty years after Stalin's death Seeger mildly said he had been mistakenly taken in and didn't understand the cruelty going on. Forty years of silence later.
Along with the deliberate forced starvation he also held purge trials with an estimate one million people killed as a result.
There were two honest journalists who reported the mass murder in the Ukraine, Gareth Jones and Malcolm Muggeridge. Muggeridge was a reporter for the left-wing newspaper The Guardian and got fired for reporting the truth. Jones was subsequently murdered in Mongolia possibly by Soviet agents.

I am at the moment re-reading Robert Conquest’s “The Harvest of Sorrow” one of the major works on the Holodomor.
Stalin, who murdered these people, was affectionately referred to as "Uncle Joe" by FDR.

To single out ‘Holodomor’ from the rest of Stalin’s collectivization of farming communities all around former USSR which was exactly the same is intellectually dishonest.
It doesn’t do justice for the rest of Stalin’s victims and also falsely attributes ethnic accent to the whole thing.
It would be more correctly to say ‘farmer’ s genocide’ instead of ‘Ukrainian genocide’ and to blame Russians for it is another dishonesty because Russians suffered the most due to it but they don’t blame Ukrainians despite the fact of how many Ukrainians were among Stalin’s enforcers.

I am of Ukrainian descent.
That Russians died because of the Georgian despot and his successor is NOT my concern. My kin HATE them both.
That as many Ukrainians died as Hitler killed Jews at the hands of this despot, the WORLD not hating him equally is hypocrisy writ large.
He too killed the sick, and other ethnicities.
But Hitler killed Jews. So did Stalin. So did Lenin, for that matter...
I very much respect the suffering of yours but once again that interpretation of Ukrainian part of collectivization falsely vilify Russians as part of it by association them as a group with Stalin regime. I wouldn’t even blame Georgians for Stalin. Stalin’s many crimes including that is a common tragedy of all including Russians, Ukrainians, Georgians and a lot of other groups.
To look an this legacy as a source of identity politics in 21th century is vile and hypocritical in itself.
OK.I will ignore the forced importation of MILLIONS OF ethnic Russians into Ukraine to dilute ethnic ties as soon as you ignore the invasion of South Americans into the USA.
