From Wednesday, August 28, through Monday, September 2, the information provided by NOAA and the National Hurricane Center to President Trump and the wider public demonstrated that tropical-storm-force winds from Hurricane Dorian could impact Alabama. This is clearly demonstrated in Hurricane Advisories #15 through #41, which can be viewed at the following link.

The Birmingham National Weather Service’s Sunday morning tweet spoke in absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time.

It's actually not nonsense. At the time the Birmingham office tweeted their response, at 11 AM on the 1st of September, it was a very reasonable tweet. At that time the forecasted track was well off the east coast of the US...and even though the "earliest reasonable arrival" of tropical storm winds still "technically" had a sliver of Alabama in it - there was ZERO chance of ANY impacts (other than clear skies) from Dorian. The tweet was spot on.

When you look at the actual FORECAST of the tropical storm wind field and lay it next to the track on Sept 1 at 11 AM - the tropical-storm-force winds don't come within 200 miles of Alabama - and they hadn't since about the 31st.

I spent 32 years as a professional meteorologist. There was nothing wrong with the tweet at the time it was made. If I was forecasting for that population - I would have said the exact same thing and been 100% correct given the track and given the wind field. The link put out by NOAA is (which is the ERA) will not verify for most locations - it is a worst-case scenario. For instance - the Florida keys and the coast of northern Cuba are ALSO in the track of those maps at that time - and it would have been ABSOLUTELY WRECKLESS to have suggested they would have gotten sustained tropical-storm-force winds.

There's nothing wrong with the tweet. It was a good forecast.

Actually - no - he wasn't. He actually got bad information from a coast guard admiral (Schultz). The forecast was very clear on Sunday what it was doing. Alabama was BARELY in the ERA map - but for that matter - so was the northern coast of CUBA! And if you look at it - more of CUBA was at risk than Alabama.

However-it really wasn't his fault - it was the fault of the person briefing him. He can't be expected to know what all the models are showing - etc. And on Sunday - all the models were showing a clear re-curve up the coast...even all the ensembles. Only one model even brought it to the coast - and it's a trash model. There was NO forecast putting any impacts into Alabama by any official forecast...only by people who don't know what they are doing (i.e. - non-meteorologists)
