SAN DIEGO -- A man was charged in federal court Tuesday in connection with the deaths of three Chinese migrants, including a mother and her 15-year-old son, who were found dead in the trunk of a car.
Prosecutors said Neil Edwin Valera, a U.S. citizen who resides in Tijuana, smuggled the three migrants in his BMW and left them in the trunk of the car two days after he crossed into the United States through the San Ysidro Port of Entry in the same car.
Valera, a truck driver from El Paso, Texas, was taken into custody at the downtown bus station on Saturday.
He was charged via complaint with Encouraging Aliens to Enter Resulting in Death and Bringing in Aliens without Presentation for Financial Gain...

Smuggling humans should be an automatic death penalty.

In this case the criminals actions proved fatal.
Have to wonder why the smuggler never let them out, demanding ransom for additional payment?

Sorry, I have no pity for these criminals stupid enough to climb into the trunk of a car on a hot day in order to break into our country.
Even if there was a safety latch, with three adults crammed in there they may not have been able to reach it. But smugglers would probably disable such latches so their cargo couldn’t give them away during a crossing by prematurely popping the trunk. As hot as it is cargo would definitely be prone to trying to get fresh air at inconvenient times for the smuggler if the smuggler made no effort to ventilate the trunk better. I wonder if their smuggler got drunk and or drugged up with their money and left them there then realized they were dead later and abandoned the car.
