...you could have been in it's eye and walked with it. Perhaps some survived that way.

Yes, Josh Morgerman among them. His car actually started and he drove some folks to a better shelter during the eye (he was in a concrete block school). At the new shelter there were people who walked or swam there (there was 20 feet or more of surge).

Wrong. An F5 tornado has WAY higher wind speeds that CAT5 hurricane. F5 tornado goes from 265-318 mph., CAT5 hurricane is 185 and up.

construction standards

Exactly. My deck is constructed better than some of those houses. It has hurricane straps on all joists and is bolted into the concrete footers.

Yeah, I am still waiting to see 185/225 damage. So far I have not. That said, the storm had a cat 5 appearance on satellite and Josh Morgerman, a storm chaser, measured 813.4 mb in the eye. That means cat 5 wind for the compact wind field that the storm had at that point.

most of what you see is water borne debris scattered on wastelanf including what seems to be marshy

The video shows many many buildings including houses intact with shingles still on

The presence of 40 foot containers well inland indicated very high water.

That's not the island that got the 24+ hours of it! That's video of Acabo...

Abaco got the strongest winds.

Dorian moved through Abaco fairly quickly, at which point it sat on top of Grand Bahama Island for most of 36 hours. Much of the island no longer exists.

The Bahamas has some limestone. They will need to import the natural gas to calcinate the limestone.

And diesel for the excavation and crushers, etc.

Yes, but it was weaker by then.

Much of the island no longer exists.

Uh no. Look at the pictures and maps posted so far. Part of it was underwater, including the airport. But at least half was above water with less wind damage than Abaco.

Very sad. Looks like we are sending Coast Guard help at a minimum. This is an independent Commonwealth, previously a UK entity until the 1970’s. I wonder who’s going to pick up the tab for this recovery?

The mayor of London is on the way with a boatload of burkas and knives. /yes, I know this is not a time for sarcasm.

I would be interested in what West End Bahamas looks like as I spent honeymoon there at Jack Tar Village.

Looking ahead along the cone track Dorian is projected to hit Martha’s Vinyard. I wonder what those pilling for a Mar-a-lago hit will say if Obama’s
newly bought beach house gets hit? Edgerton’s elevation is listed as merely 17 feet. Bahamas level storm surge would put the new party house, and all the old Teddy K memorial sites, under water.

Wouldn't that be ironic?
