Idaho pilot becomes first woman to fly F-35 jet for Marine Corps

A commercial helicopter pilot from Idaho has become the first woman in the Marine Corps to fly an F-35 fighter jet, a supersonic stealth aircraft.

Marine Capt. Anneliese Satz, a 29-year-old Boise native, completed her training program this past June at South Carolina’s Air Station Beaufort, the Marine Corps announced last week. Satz’s training lasted four years, taking her to bases in Florida, Texas and Mississippi.

“The first flight in an F-35 is by yourself,” Satz said. "The syllabus thoroughly prepares you for that first time you take off and for every flight after that, it’s an exhilarating experience."

Now, with over 300 flight hours under her belt, Satz is set to pilot the F-35B Lightning II as part of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, the Green Knights, in Iwakuni, Japan. The aircraft is designed to operate from short-field bases and near front-line combat zones, the Corps said.

Satz said her time flying a commercial Robinson R44 Helicopter prepared her for a career as a military pilot. She also thanked her instructors and other members of her training squadron.

Congratulations Captain Satz! What an accomplishment, and by age 29, too!

I hope she is capable and not just a diversity promotion (there have been some of those in the past, and the results were tragic).

Very trendy. 29 year olds should be creating a home, and having babies.

Except for those in "the squad".

I read about her the other day, and what I found interesting is they're going straight from basic pilot training to the F-35.

With the AV-8B, it was found that if the pilot spent some time in the Hornet, getting used to staying ahead of a jet before moving to the Harrier, there were a lot fewer 'Carolina Lawn Darts'.

I'm betting qualified. That billet is very hard to get and the plane is too valuable to play games assigning pilots.

Still...there is that Laura Hultgren lingering doubt.

Ha! That was my first thought as well. I guess neither us will be asked to host a diversity seminar anytime soon.

Fly-by-wire, the great equalizer.

It’s bad enough that young men die in combat.

Killing young women is killing the future.

I hope they don’t push the pilots too fast into F-35s as you suggest could be happening. On the other hand, I’ve spoken to a few pilots who have flown F-35s or spent hours in the flight sim and to a man (I guess and woman, now) they have all said something to the effect of the F-35 being a completely different flying experience from other fightrs, in a good way. I’m not a pilot so I don’t know though. Nor do I know if they mean it’s easier to pull off tough maneuvers or what. just reporting some data.

Our friends’ daughter has flown for the Navy for a long time. I have pictures of her when she was about eight coloring pictures in our house. Who knew she’d grow up to do that?

Fantastic accomplishment. I have the utmost respect for any fighter pilot. It takes, guts, brains and persistence.

Kudos to this lady!

Never happened. Newly minted Marine Aviators went straight to VMAT-203 for training in the AV-8A/C/B.

Okay, you would know a lot more about that than I would. Just something I read. I was not involved in Aviation, eyeballs were no good.
