I Know From Experience This Urban Agenda Would Lift Baltimore and Other Cities
The Daily Signal ^ | August 5, 2019 | Kay Coles James

You may not like the messenger, but embedded in the recent political dust-up about the crime, poverty, and despair in Baltimore were some undeniable truths.

If nothing else comes out of this latest debate, the bright light is now shining on a very inconvenient reality: Liberal policies have failed the people of Baltimore and inner cities everywhere.

As the daughter of a former welfare recipient who spent my early years growing up in government housing, I know the truth of that statement more than most.

For decades, politicians have repeatedly promised urban communities good jobs, good schools, and safe neighborhoods. Instead, they have delivered policies that actually increase crime, degrade educational standards, and make it harder to get work.

The debate this incident has sparked sadly takes me back to a few years ago, when I was at my niece Ashley’s funeral service. Ashley was a product of the inner city. She was 32 years old when she died of a drug overdose.

She started out as a beautiful, strong, and intelligent young girl who had so much promise. But like so many others who grew up in that environment, she became disengaged from school, started hanging out with the wrong crowd, and began using drugs.

As I sat in the pew that day, I thought: Why does this keep happening in my community and what is it going to take to finally stop it?

Anger began to overtake my sadness, though, when I looked over and saw the precious teenage daughter Ashley had left behind. How were we going to protect her from the same fate?

Kay, you are so right but,

The Democrat Party makes their fortune stealing from government,

And you are fighting that.

The Democrats will do anything to keep the government money going into their pockets.

Great article. It seems so obvious, but liberals cannot wrap their brains around it - their condescending, paternalistic hubris has ruined the lives of the people they imagined they were helping.

Instead of learning, they fight to continue the destruction.

“As I sat in the pew that day, I thought: Why does this keep happening in my community and what is it going to take to finally stop it?”

It’s going to take people IN the communities working together to save themselves. The rest of us Taxpayers can give them the tools, but we cannot do the work for them.

Oh, and stop voting for your own demise!

(I know it’s not as simple as this...)

Superb article. I do not know how anyone could read it and not get moved.

I spent four of my formative years in an impoverished town in Kansas. People overcame it because they had intact families.

My Dad was asked by the town fathers to serve as Justice of the Peace because he was one of the few in town with a college education. Now college educations are the norm and parents lack the common sense of high school drop out parents in that town.

The only thing that will save these cities is personal responsibility.

Baby daddies - be responsible for your kids. Be there every day 24/7 as a family and marry their mama. Better yet, use condoms or keep your pants on.

Baby mamas - keep your knees together or demand he wear condoms or you take your BC religiously.

Adults - get a job no matter how low on the ladder it is. Go to work every day, on time and actually do the job. Do your job better and you’ll advance. Leave the phone at home. Leave your love life at home. Leave the drugs with the dealers and not in your house.

Parents - make sure the kids are at school every day and on time. Do their homework with the kids and make sure they turn it in on time. Don’t let the kids hang with low lifes and get into drugs.

Kids - look after each other and make sure the siblings aren’t making bad choices behind mom and dad’s backs. Get to school every day, on time and pay attention in the classroom. Study to make good grades and graduate so you can get a job.

Families - Family is #1 above any gang association. Keep the house clean. Clean up outside. Clean up the neighborhood. It doesn’t cost a dime to pick up garbage.

One of the points this very successful woman who wrote the article is making is that she, herself, did not have a father at home, but she overcame. She knows it's possible; and she mourns her niece and all the other excuse-making underclass people who won't try.

By the way, I have encountered this author Kay Coles James at a DC event, where I observed her to be a beautiful, soft-spoken person with admirable conservative friends, and I have read her testimony as a Christian as well. She is the real deal, like Ben Carson.
