“There are but 155 years left … at which time … the world will come to an end,” wrote Christopher Columbus in his book “Libro de Las Profecias,” composed in 1502 between his third and fourth voyages.
Columbus continued: “… The sign which convinces me that our Lord is hastening the end of the world is the preaching of the Gospel recently in so many lands.”
Though his predictions were off, Columbus’ writings revealed his motivation for setting sail on his first voyage Aug. 3, 1492, with the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria. He sought to find a sea route to India and China as the Islamic Ottoman Turks had closed off the land routes 40 years earlier.
The background of the Islamic state occupying large areas of Europe began when Muslim crusaders, called “Moors,” invaded Spain in 711 A.D. With a cavalry of 80,000, Moors wielding curved scimitar swords, “went through all places like a desolating storm.” The Mozarabic Chronicle, 754 A.D., recorded that thousands of churches were burned and: “God alone knows the number of the slain.”
In 846 A.D., just 46 years after Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome’s old St. Peter’s Basilica, 11,000 Muslims on 73 ships invaded Rome and sacked the Basilica. They looted old St. Peter’s basilica and desecrated the grave of St. Peter. Invaders then trashed the remains of St. Paul, which were in the historic church, San Paolo fuori le Mura (St Paul’s outside the Walls). As a result of this invasion, Pope Leo IV began building a massive wall to protect the Vatican from Muslims raiders.

They packed enough food to last Columbus and the crew a full year and stopped at the Canary Islands to onboard even more food (to replace what they ate up to that point).
Food was always on the minds of the sailors. The following is a list of staple food items that were carried on the ships:
The olive oil and olives were stored in earthenware jugs. The rest of the food was stored in wooden casks which could hold produce like meat preserved in brine, or dry goods. All were stored in the hold, the driest section of which was reserved for casks carrying dry provisions. A cooper (barrel maker) was responsible for keeping the casks tight. Problem was the casks with brine would leak, the casks with dry goods would let water in. It was easy to loose much of your food and water.
The food was mainly boiled and served in a large communal wooden bowl. The sailors had no forks or spoons, but each sailor carried an all purpose knife, that he could use to cut large chunks. The only means of cooking was an open firebox called "Fogon." It had a back to screen it from the wind. Sand was spread on the floor of the box and a wood fire built on it.
Fish was served more often than meat. Meats were usually prepared in a stew with peas other legumes or rice and served with sea biscuits which were soaked in the soup or in water to make them edible. Sea biscuits would last at least a year if they were kept dry.
Both wine and water for drinking were stored in wooden barrels.

The sailors were just that . . . sailors. Mercenaries, men for hire. They were hirelings assigned by Spain to do a job. It stands to reason that Columbus tried to win them to Christ as well, but they were looking for gold and native women — not a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Actually his crew was not entirely Christian. He had a pretty diverse crew due to so many people being afraid to sail into the unknown.

I think we should also place this article in current context. The trade routes to the east were closed to Europe when the Muslims took Constantinople. Now look at Spain and the EU today demanding that Britain give up Gibraltar as part of Brexit.
On the present course Spain will be a Muslim country in 20-40 years. They will then control both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar and can shut off sea traffic at will. I guess in modern days, nobody needs to have ships go through there anymore?
