The American flag has become a symbol of resistance against China in the ongoing protests in Hong Kong, prominently waved throughout the city this past weekend as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into the peaceful crowds.
Millions of Hong Kong residents have participated in rallies since early June against a bill proposed in the city’s legislature that would have allowed China to extradite anyone present in Hong Kong by accusing him or her of breaking Chinese law. Under the “One Country, Two Systems” policy China agreed to when the U.K. handed Hong Kong over in 1997, Hong Kong must abandon any claims to sovereignty in exchange for China not imposing communist laws on the city. The protesters objected that the extradition law would violate that policy.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam claimed the bill was “dead” this month, but protesters astutely noted that lawmakers had tabled the bill, allowing them to revive it any time. Protesters are demanding that the Legislative Council withdraw the bill entirely.
Protests this weekend were not about the bill, but against gang violence towards protesters last week. Pro-democracy advocates congregated last week in northern Yuen Long, a rural area outside of the central city, to protest the bill. Following the protest, an estimated 100 white-clad thugs surrounded the peaceful crowds moving into the Yuen Long Mass Transit Rail station, beating them with metal rods and bamboo sticks. Following the mob attack, 45 people were hospitalized and, despite the dozens of attackers, little more than ten people arrested.

This is really heart-warming to see, but I fear for Hong Kong and the protesters. Xi will take this personal and the empire will strike back.
It very well might. Today’s Chinese have never known freedom, they admit the government is just too strong for them to do anything about it.
Those in Hong Kong have known freedom. If the Chinese government tries to increase their grip they’re only going to exacerbate the problem.
Yes, this may well end up bloody. If the Chinese are smart they’ll back off, otherwise this might end very badly for the Chinese government too.

The cure for internal strife is war with an external foe. Then, all dissension is unpatriotic and treasonous.
My sister works in HK for an international bank and I go there every year. God knows how many conversations I had there with the locals and most I spoke with have a deep hatred for China..
I took a ferry from Hong Kong into mainland China several years ago. Waiting on a ride to show up after getting off the ferry a Chinese man walked up and asked if I was an American. When I answered yes he asked if I liked Obama?. When I answered not particularly (not sure where this was headed and it was almost dark) He said “Obama weak man! Obama pu—y! So...there you have it from a simple Chinese man on the street.
Beijing is currently mulling over sending the PLA in to quell the uprising - and they will when Xi Jinping's loss of face becomes too great. No prisoners, no survivors, no bodies - flush them down the sewers like last time.
