I understand they are no longer endangered, though it may still be illegal to shoot them.
Reminds me of this oldie:
A game warden is walking down the beach and comes across a guy cooking up a seagull. The game warden explains that he’s gonna have to ticket him.
The man pleads that he is destitute and was starving, and saw the bird, with a lame foot, and knew it would not survive. So he killed it and cooked it up and will never do it again.
The game warden had compassion for the guy and just gave him a verbal warning to never do it again. As he walked away, his curiosity got the best of him. He turned and said, “I’ve always wondered - what does seagull taste like?”
The man thought for a moment and then said, “It’s kind of a cross between spotted owl and bald eagle.”

I remember Johnny Carson’s redneck character Floyd R Turbo was on saying something like “I don’t get the fuss about bald eagles being endangered. If you want to see bald eagles come over to my house, I’ve got ten of them on my living room wall.”
