Why Young People Turn Socialist
Daily Dose of Reason ^ | July 25, 2019 | Michael J. Hurd

Here’s how a young person turns socialist.

One, envy. Envy is the view, “Others have a lot. I can never have a lot. That’s not fair”. A non-envious person sees success or achievement and thinks, “Wow, if he did that, I can do that too”. An envious person thinks, “He can do/have all that. But I can’t. That’s not fair”. All the young socialists I know are envious.

Two, low self-confidence. “I don’t know how to use my mind. I have no clue.” That’s because of Common Core/public education, in most cases. Such schooling is based not just on leftist dogma, but also on the idea that individual minds cannot think objectively, rationally or independently. Conventional education emphasizes group think and group membership, not the individual achievement of objective, independent thought. That’s a recipe for fear and low self-confidence. Fearful people don’t like freedom. Socialism is the drug for the fear.

Three, false confidence. “My favorite music, sports and other celebrities like socialism and leftism. So it must be true.” Heroes are important, especially to young people. Yet their heroes got where they are by the opposite of leftism — through capitalism, self-interest, drive, determination, ambition and the like. Nevertheless, the false leftist views are validated by a sense that because people of importance — “cool” people — think a certain way, it must be valid. Also, teachers tell them throughout their school years that they’re great, no matter how well they achieve or fail to achieve. Most of them believe it, on the surface level. They relate and “think” with superficial confidence and, not so far beneath the surface, have profound anxiety.

Four, false ideology. Both old fashioned religion/traditional values AND modern leftism say the same thing: Man is his brother’s keeper. Your life does not belong to you. There has GOT to be something bigger than yourself. This can only mean: Your life is not the most important thing to you. Your life belongs to others. It may be OK to care for yourself to a point, but the only valid or moral approach to life is to live for others. This fits with socialism. It’s all the socialists talk about.

That’s pretty much it. Try out this theory with young people you know. See where it fits, where it doesn’t fit or what it does or doesn’t leave out.

Lazy minds, aka a lack of common sense.

Guilt is also a reason, so is hatred of the nature of reality (i.e hating having to earn one’s keep by trading value for value)

Its great when you think you’re going to be a taker rsther than a giver

When they realize they’re going to be a giver, many decideit’s not such a great idea after all.

If you have a kid who is a socialist tell them you are going to give half of their college stipend to someone else. After all they get $XX and the other gets none. It’s not fair. *grin*

5) They learn in college that if they adopt the attitudes of their profs they’ll get good marks and get ahead. Everybody is striving to out do each other in virtue signaling and become one of the elite.

6) Being a socialist is cool because you get to talk sh1t to the man. And you get to pretend you’re an important undiscovered artist/intellectual because you get really good vibes from people who think your ideas are way out there... like way cool.

We won the Cold War but never bothered to teach the lessons learned by design. The left believes Socialism can and will work in America.

It’s rarely the productive folks who want piles of handouts being given to the unproductive.

No. 5.

Americans see corporatists selling out to globalist Free Traitors™ and off shoring production and wealth creation to other countries destroying many small towns along the way. Also, they see the GOP and globalists importing hundreds of thousands of H-1b visa "workers" into the USA undercutting the American college educated STEM workforce simply throwing them under the bus. THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO MAKE ALMOST ANYONE CONSIDER SOCIALISM.

It has more to do with the person's values than age. Not all youths are pro-socialist, and not all old folks are pro-capitalist.

This graphic from Pew is especially noteworthy...to be sure as a group millenials look confused, but the Republican young ones are capitalists-hardly pod-eaters. At the same time, Repub Boomers are staunch capitalists; Dem Boomers are the most capitalist out of all Dem age categories, yet their percentage holding a positive view of socialism is equal to that of young Dems.

Young people don’t turn socialist. They are trained by the state to be socialist, and then experience real life. Look at the 30-to-45-year-old age group. They’re almost as Trump-leaning as any other already, but in 11 years ago, when they were mostly the 18-to-30 year-old block, they were more than 2-to-1 for Obama over McCain.

Why Young People Turn Socialist

Because the rules of Capitalism were broken, people got greedy instead of leaving enough for the middle.

Not to mention the amounts being paid to the public sector.

It is not sustainable. Those that have the power to get something better than the crumbs they have been left will go with socialism.

Short answer: Greed in the system.

I could have been considered a Socialist up until I was about thirteen. I moved to the left-center until I was fifteen, at which point I continued to move to the right until sixteen, when I was diagnosed with a couple serious illnesses and stayed solidly center-right. Now I identify politically as Libertarian.

It was idealism and naïvetè. I thought of what was “fair” for all. As a child, you think, “Everyone should have the same income, right? Then they have what they need and nobody will have too much.”. Of course, that’s not how that works, proving just how childish Socialism really is. There’s a reason the Greeks had a dual meaning for “utopos”. Utopia simply isn’t possible given Human nature.

On number 3; “my favorite music, sports and other celebrities like socialism and leftism so it must be true”.

Of course it is kid, they are already RICH, they can afford to love STUPID IDEAS!

I will concede; they worked for their riches, even if I think they are overpaid.
