Why cant America build or repair infrastructure on a par with countries in Europe or Asia? Why are our bridges, roads, and airports not what they should be? Arent we the richest and most technologically savvy country in the world? Who or what is holding us back? Kyle Smith of National Review has the surprising (and frustrating) answer.
The projects highlighted in the piece are new deals which are, to be sure, opposed by the green anuses. But the meme of a crumbling infrastructure is a wet dream of the society of civil engineers.
The blacktop cannot be whitewashed, but if you use a rainbow, intersectional coating, that is OK.
That is why most states and locales no longer have a Highway Department or Road Department. Instead they have a Transportation Department so they can easily divert funds from highways and roads to street cars and trains.
Socialist double shuffle.
Okay, here how the game is played.
You’re complaining about pot holes.
Well we just need to increase taxes to pay for it.
Lets take a vote, who wants potholes repaired?
Once you do that something else will pop up like snow removal.
Who wants the snow removed?
Well lets take a vote...........
Why are our taxes so high? Well you voted for it.
Look at it as a 3 card Monty game.
I saw them installing storm drains on an island.
Think about that, the only way it will flood is if the ocean rises.
It did wonders for their property values though.
Everywhere else gets a special taxing district to pay for new roads.
Yes. It is not complicated.
THAT....was depressing.
A few drops diesel in the mix destroys the blacktop when still hot before mix is poured in hole or resurfacing a roadway.
Dont believe any of the ridership numbers from the Milwaukee Choo Choo, its empty most of the time. The elite in Milwaukee only care about certain parts and to hell with the rest . Same is true for Evers, he only cares about Madistan.
I was a member of the laborors union back in my teens ( a long time ago ) we did contract work for a large utility company. Sometimes we would damage a street. We used cold patch, but did it correctly. The patch would last for years. The process is simple by time consuming..
1) blow ALL debris out of hole.
2) apply cold patch to just overflowing.
3) use a pneumatic tamper to tamp down the center and sides into the existing roadway.
4) add more cold patch and repeat until hole is filled and smooth with the top.
when is the last time you saw a repair crew with a tamper?
All infrastructure is built by the lowest bidder. On top of which a little malfeasance by the inspector and you have yourself a project that will last half as long as expected.
Yup, exactly right. Around here they usually wait until the potholes are filled with water before they patch. Bosnia during the war had better roads than VT.
I thought Domino’s had taken on that job...must have gotten too expensive so they opted for “pizza wreckage insurance” instead...probably have to replace 2 pizzas a month nationwide and that’s way cheaper than filling a pothole.
It’s done on the state and local level. Nothing to do with “America.”
Highway taxes and fees are diverted to social welfare programs. What is left is miniscule and with the inefficiencies of public unions doing the work, well, not much gets done.
Liberal Unions with the work ethic of doing the job as slow as possible.
The people who want potholes filled are being squeezed by extremists on both left and right. On the left, by people who hate the automobile or want to pay unionized contractors exorbitant prices for a fix. On the right, by conservatives who oppose any user fee increases required to raise funds for a fix, or who require every project or use of the funds be theoretically perfect, i.e., not one cent for pork or bike trails before we can go forward.

We can’t fill potholes because most of our tax dollars are funding welfare giveaways and the salaries of the poverty pimps whose jobs depend on keeping people dependent.
Taxes were originally supposed to pay for common goods which individuals cannot themselves do, such as building & maintaining roads, bridges, etc.
Taxes were never intended to feed, house, & clothe people unwilling to provide for their own families.
And, presumably, Milwaukee and maybe Green Bay. Another reason why each state should establish a county-by-county electoral college-style system for electing governors.
