Trump drops executive action on U.S. Census, will seek citizenship survey by other means
R ^ | 7/11/19 UPDATED AN HOUR AGO | Jeff Mason, David Shepardson

Posted on 07/11/2019 1:20:54 PM PDT by conservative98

A government official confirmed that Trump is expected to announce he will drop the legal battle to include the question on the census survey and instead direct the Commerce Department to obtain answers on citizenship through other means, but it was not clear how that would occur or how it would be funded.

The U.S. Census Bureau is part of the Commerce Department. The U.S. Constitution specifically assigns the job of overseeing the census to Congress, limiting the authority of the president over it, which complicates adding the question to the decennial survey via presidential missive.

Trump’s decision not to proceed with an executive order on adding the citizenship question to the census was first reported by ABC News.

most of what he does is reasonable. This approach will lose in court and they will use history as precedent; ironically the same thing they should have done to include the question.

Baby steps! Opposition is strong. Trump works hard for his base, but the judges keep overruling him. He keeps finding workarounds to the media, the Democrats, and the judges. The Deep state is firmly entrenched it will take time to overcome them. Be patient!

For all here throwing our President under the bus...you are the one without knowledge. This is a genius move. I've worked at the US Census many times starting in the 60's through 2000. This is how the liberals running the Census would handle this.....the Census takers will fill out all the form but leave the legal question blank....trust me...then the form goes to the transcriber. The Census worker will be instructed to mark the blank legal. Its that easy. SO a Census alone will NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

If this BS holds, this will be my 3rd census in a row that I did not return. No trouble, so far. I live on an island. The last one I did complete, I checked Pacific Islander. After all, I live in Puget Sound. I didn’t exactly lie...

That order is not going to put the citizenship question on the census forms.

Impossible to please some people.

You do know Trump is not a dictator..no? He has to fight tooth and nail for everything he gets. The government is not on our side.

If the founding fathers gave up as easily as you and your parents, we’d still be paying taxes to England. Where’s your patriotic spirit? Where your sense of fight? You could just do like your parents and give up, he didn’t do everything we wanted (although he fought like hell and tried) but we didn’t get what we want so we give up.

When it comes to immigration, he has caved on literally everything.

When it comes to “literally everything”, outside of corporate tax cuts, his own party won’t support him.

I know right, impossible to please — outrageous to expect Trump to deliver for once. Maybe he can ban some other firearm accessory or tweet out a tweet in support of gay pride month to make up for it.

He promised the world, and Mexico would pay for it. Years later, nothing, and he has caved several times on closing the border, building a wall, etc. He waited until after the GOP lost the House to get serious. Yeah, they were uncooperative. Waiting until the dems had the House...May as well attempt to negotiate with the rain. He knew the government was against us, a swamp, didn’t stop him from promising to make the sun stand still in spite of them at dozens of rallies. If he couldn’t deliver “on time and under budget” he shouldn’t have promised that he could.

As a side note, my dad was the first person in our line to go to college after growing up on one floor of a triple decker, went to war for our country, and worked his way up to a six figure income while raising a family. I wouldn’t say he should be tagged as someone who gives up easily. He simply recognizes that we’re just as disenfranchised now as we ever were and there’s not much point to investing in politics if we don’t even have national borders or the capacity to know how many people living in our country are even supposed to be here.

Excuse me for being demoralized. Our country is marching away from our values at an increasing speed and we can’t stop it. I don’t blame Trump for that, but he shouldn’t promise he can do anything about it if he can’t.

It was the same way here when Bush was president, right up until the end of his second term some people wouldn’t hear a word against him.

Is Trump God? No? Then he is open for criticism on occasion when it’s warranted. The worshipful attitude some people have is ridiculous.

Voting or not voting is a choice. One can only hope to have
a very minor influence but then they can elect to have no
influence/choice at all via the ballot box. It’s theirs. In
either case we are living under the outcome, good or bad.

We can't quit fighting because we lost a battle. As far as him promising to do things, he has tried, I guess he didn't have enough foresight to see judges blocking everything he does. And maybe we are a bit protective of him but he is trying so hard, working so hard, he deserves a bit of credit and a bit of loyalty for his efforts. He's never been a politician before, he didn't know how hard it would be to get stuff done when ever our "own' side is putting up road blocks. The way I look at it, our government is so corrupt, it may be impossible to get what he wants done but that doesn't mean we should give up.
