Starting on July 22, 2019, Walmart will no longer sell firearms in New Mexico.
A spokesperson for the retail giant told local media that the decision was in response to the July 1st rollout of the state’s new universal background check law.
“Unlike a specialty sporting goods retailer where customers expect to see firearms of various types being handled, Walmart customers do not generally expect to see individuals walking through the store potentially carrying multiple firearms, which can lead to confusion and potentially putting both our customers and associates at risk,” Walmart spokeswoman Tiffany Wilson told KOAT.
Signed into law back in March by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) the “Firearm Sale Background Check” legislation requires background checks for private, person-to-person gun sales and transfers.

BS. A clerk carries the boxed gun and escorts the buyer to an exit.
This law is unenforceable unless they also have mandatory registration, which I think is the end game for these universal background check laws.

That’s been my experience. And in NY no less.
Walmart has always been an FFL and done NICS check on buyers. The law changes nothing about the situation for them.
I think this is them blowing smoke to cover a desire to stop selling firearms on their own, and blame someone else.

Uh?? What does this have to do with universal background check?
Just do it the normal way and go to any flea market, find a guy in the parking lot in an old chevy with the trunk open named Jesus and give him some money. Gun buying is easy in NM as any other state. /S

Here’s why. They are requiring ANY FFL holder to conduct background checks on any private sales if approached. Opens up a whole new avenue of liability for the retailer.
This is the left’s plan to basically overregulate RKBA into oblivion from a thousand different angles.
I can see them being concerned about people bringing firearms into the store, but I always go to the receptionist, probably customer service at Walmart, and ask for an escort, and carry a cased gun into the store. Are there so few local gun stores in New Mexico? How about the police station? Government wants background checks, tie them up doing them.
I’ve bought exactly one gun at a Walmart. So slow that I probably wouldn’t do it again. And at Bimart, I sometimes got “the look” from someone. Once I think the guy was just a jealous felon. Dealing with a LGS mitigates those things.

Exactly like I said. For a business whose purpose is in general merchandise it’s ridiculous to make them transfer firearms that they are not selling. It is the State
Most of our sheriffs have vowed not to enforce that law.
