Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who has been accused of sexually assaulting two women, is quitting the law firm where he works in Northern Virginia, a spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday.
Fairfax, who has adamantly denied the allegations and demanded criminal investigations in the cities where the women say the assaults occurred Boston and Durham, N.C. was placed on leave from the law firm Morrison and Foerster in February after the allegations emerged.
Morrison and Foerster has been independently investigating the allegations, and Fairfax said in a statement Tuesday the firm could not confirm the accusations.
It has been an honor to be affiliated with such a distinguished firm as Morrison and Foerster and I wanted to allow them to conclude their investigation before announcing my departure from the firm, he said. But with that process completed, I have decided that, at the present time, it is best for me to focus my attention on serving the people of Virginia.
When it seemed as though Fairfax could become governor following calls for Gov. Ralph Northams resignation over a racist yearbook photo, Vanessa Tyson and Meredith Watson came forward with the allegations.
Watson accused Fairfax of a premeditated and aggressive sexual assault in 2000, while both were undergraduate students at Duke University.
Tyson, a professor, accused Fairfax of forcing her to perform oral sex during an encounter in July 2004 at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.
Both women have said they would be willing to testify in public hearings and have asked the Virginia legislature to hold such hearings, but Democrats say criminal investigations into the allegations need to happen first.
In June, Fairfaxs lawyer wrote to prosecutors in Boston and Durham, formally asking them to investigate the claims.
Fairfax has hinted at a race for governor in 2021; he recently told reporters at a roundtable he was thinking seriously about a run, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
His spokeswoman, Lauren Burke, said for now, hes focusing on his lieutenant governor duties and attending community meetings. Hes scheduled to be in Portsmouth Tuesday afternoon to discuss gun violence.
Fairfax will be back in Richmond presiding over the state Senate July 9 for the special session on gun legislation.
I think someone is trying to send Fairfax a message.
This little drama has been going on since last January.
It was pushed out of the news for a while by the Jussie (yes, I lied!) Smolette story.
MSM has not been eager to push this story.
Most of us here decided months ago that he would take the fall for Blackface Gov.
He is a democrat!
Media are supposed to lower the tune.
Anyone know how this guy held a job in a law firm in the first place? Is Lt. Gov. a part-time job in Virginia?
it might be because he is not white
If this guy is a partner in the law firm then he’s expected to make them money and if he is not making them money he is losing them money. And I’m guessing that is the reason he was asked to resign.
Is he a partner in a law firm at the same time he is lieutenant governor? Why hasn't he resigned his lieutenant governor position as well?
For that matter, why hasn't Northam been pressed to resign as governor? Oh, they're Democrat. Nevermind.
It looks like the Democrat Party and media stonewall may be crumbling. An ethical law firm can’t afford to have an offender on their staff, no matter what their political leanings. They didn’t fire him for fudging his billing records.

If you work for a law firm you MUST produce or you are gone.
If you are a politician you don’t have to produce a F’n thing. All that you need do is tell everyone what they want to hear and then do nothing.
MORE SCUMBAGS in government? It’s like a magnet for them.
baby steps
I don’t understand the duality of being an elected politician and also keeping your day job as a member of a law firm.
Pretty much, yes. Most of our elected offices are part-timers — the entire house and senate are part-time, and most have other jobs.
