Tanks arrive in DC as Trump confirms July Fourth celebration will feature military display

President Trump’s dream of a celebration showing off America's military capabilities will become a reality on Thursday, as the president confirmed tanks will play a role in Washington, D.C.’s Fourth of July festivities -- and the vehicles were seen being hauled in on a freight train.

An Associated Press photographer spotted the two M1A1 Abrams tanks, along with four other military vehicles, in a railyard at the southeastern edge of Washington. A military official earlier told the AP that the tanks were transported north from Fort Stewart in Georgia.

This comes after the president said Monday: "We're going to have some tanks stationed outside."

The vehicles include M1A1 Abrams tanks, the type currently used by American armed forces, as well as Sherman tanks, the kind commonly used during World War II, according to the president. Having tanks rolling down the streets of D.C. had raised concerns due to their weight, with the Abrams tanks weighing upwards of 60 tons each. Trump acknowledged these concerns Monday, without offering many details.

"You've got to be pretty careful with the tanks because the roads have a tendency not to like to carry heavy tanks," Trump said Monday. "So we have to put them in certain areas, but we have the brand new Sherman tanks and we have the brand new Abrams tanks."

The military display is all part of the “Salute to America” event that Trump is putting on this Thursday.

"I'm going to say a few words and we're going to have planes going overhead, the best fighter jets in the world and other planes, too," Trump said. This includes a demonstration by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

The tanks will stay. It will be Independence Day celebrating freedom from the Congressional yoke of tyranny. The tanks will leave after the last domestic enemy of the United States of America has been sentenced the the last public execution has been performed. (Well, one can always hope, eh?)

Yes, they are part of our foundation myths that we used to teach our children about themselves and our country.

These were important. Betsy Ross made little girls feel proud and included. Washington as a boy was honest.

One would think a poster with the tag name Sacajaweau might understand inclusiveness.

Please feel free call Washington a colt-killer instead - it's still a sort of free country.

PC NIGHTMARE---Nike 'pulls Betsy Ross flag trainer after Kaepernick complaint'

Image copyright---

US sportswear giant Nike has pulled trainers emblazoned with an early version of the US flag after a complaint from former NFL star Colin Kaepernick, according to reports. The Betsy Ross flag was used by the American Nazi Party as a symbol. Mr Kaepernick sparked a furore by kneeling at American football games to protest against police violence against African-Americans. He then fronted a major advertising campaign for Nike. Nike withdrew the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July trainers, which were intended to celebrate US Independence Day, after Mr Kaepernick said the firm should not use a symbol he and others may find offensive, Bloomberg reported.

The Betsy Ross flag, with a circle of 13 stars, was created during the American Revolution and later adopted for use by the American Nazi party. It is also used by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. "Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured the old version of the American flag," a Nike spokesman told the Wall Street Journal.

The reports of Nike pulling the trainer led to some furious commentary on social media, with some complaining that Mr Kaepernick was "un-American". Doug Ducey, the Republican governor of Arizona, said on Twitter that he had ordered financial incentives for Nike to invest in a multi-million dollar factory in Goodyear City to be stopped.

Other Twitter users called for a boycott of Nike products over the move.

However, some Twitter users pointed out that the flag had been used by white nationalists. In 2016, Mr Kaepernick, who was a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, began kneeling for the US national anthem in protest at police violence against African-Americans. Image caption Colin Kaepernick was a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers for six years Mr Kaepernick has not played in the National Football League (NFL) since the 2016 season, and sued the organisation, arguing team owners deliberately froze him out because of his activism, later settling with the NFL. In 2018, Mr Kaepernick appeared in Nike's "Just Do It" 30th anniversary campaign, which showed Mr Kaepernick with the slogan: "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything."

Betsy Ross was credited with sewing the first "Stars and Stripes" flag in 1776, although this version of events has been rejected by modern US scholars.

“Sherman tanks are an icon. an example of Americas greatness.”

Not really. A single 67-ton Tiger II could hold up a dozen Sherman tanks, and often did.

Is Kim invited? Putin? Xi?

We might need the tanks to fight ANTIFA.

Getting the tanks there under this pretext is great. A full-on military coup by Trump-supporting US Army generals, focused on removing the hated Congress, the next day, on the 5th of July would be welcome by many Americans.

Since some of them were already Manufactured, they will be worth a fortune if you can get your hands on them.

Nike has to recall them, so they just made them more popular and sought after than they would have been in the first place.

Think Antiques Roadshow 2035.

I've always admired people who know a lot about tanks and armor.

My Commander told me to pick a tank and crew from my Platoon for a display for President Reagan.

It was tough to choose.

They were all great.

I talked to The Tank Commander when he returned.

President Reagan had stopped to shake hands with the crew and talk to them for a couple of minutes.

What a great man and a great moment for those Soldiers.
