President Donald Trump and his aides were confronting dramatically increased tensions with Iran on Thursday after the downing of a US drone near the Persian Gulf.
"Iran made a very big mistake!" the President tweeted mid-morning as he and his national security officials huddled to weigh possible responses.
The ominous — if vague — message came after Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had shot down an "intruding American spy drone" after it entered into the country's territory Thursday.

But 6 tankers and now a drone?
Sounds like it was in their airspace. The strait waterway has passage rights. Its 21 miles wide and territorial water and airspace is 12. From other posts earlier, it sounds like a ship on the water is legal under treaties but in some places the aircraft above violates national space.

Don’t get me wrong, shooting down a drone is an act of aggression that calls for a response, but there was no loss of life, nor even an encroachment on our personnel. These drones are not cheap (actually they are, by military standards) so there is no need for lots of drama. Iran would love nothing more than to troll the U.S. into an overreaction. I can’t believe Trump would allow us to come off so noobish
In one article it said it was, and in another that it was NOT in Iran’s airspace/ I don’t trust them.
How does CNN know he referring to the drone? Maybe it is something else that we don’t know about yet.
Other than the fact that the Iranians have made a mistake, we don’t know who’s done what to whom.
Trump’s tweet can cover a lot.
I do, however, trust that Trump will deal with the situation, whatever it is, appropriately.
I expect that our preferred move will not be to respond with force but to further tighten the sanctions regime. For now, the center of gravity is not the Persian Gulf but the willingness of the Europeans to back our efforts against Iran.
I'm sure our President knows better than anyone else that he's likely to lose in 2020 if he gives the Democrats an opportunity to paint him as George W. Trump.

Iran won’t have made a “Big Mistake” unless there are consequences beyond our blustery words. They need to lose some assets.

No doubt the Marine Barracks the Iranians blew up was “in their airspace” too.
Calculate the cost of the tanks and drone. Multiple that number by 3, and quietly create a refinery explosion that approximates that value of damage.
The drone was a US asset and People cannot be allowed tp destroy them with impunity.
Saying something threatening (although vague) and doing nothing would appear to weaken his position.
Iran wants something and are not going to settle with the status quo. They want concessions or war.
I am sure Trump will make the appropriate response.
