Paul Manafort Seemed Headed to Rikers. Then the Justice Department Intervened.

Paul J. Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman who is serving a federal prison sentence, had been expected to be transferred to the notorious Rikers Island jail complex this month to await trial on a separate state case.

But last week, Manhattan prosecutors were surprised to receive a letter from the second-highest law enforcement official in the country inquiring about Mr. Manafort’s case. The letter, from Jeffrey A. Rosen, Attorney General William P. Barr’s new top deputy, indicated that he was monitoring where Mr. Manafort would be held in New York.

And then, on Monday, federal prison officials weighed in, telling the Manhattan district attorney’s office that Mr. Manafort, 70, would not be going to Rikers.

It’s good news but it shouldn’t have been necessary.

Really? The guy’s going to be treated like an animal pretty much anywhere he goes. I doubt he has few years left even after doing his sentence.

The guy wouldn’t have been charged if he wasn’t associated with Trump. Apparently they passed on the mortgage stuff years ago.

He needs a pardon.

“He needs a pardon.”

He likely will for any federal crimes. Trump cannot pardon him for any violations of state crimes.

The only way he can avoid spending more time in prison would be for some clear-headed judge ruling that he was convicted by prosecutors using “fruit from the poisonous tree,” that is the whole investigation being instigated by a fraudulent use of the FISA court.

Seems to me that Rats in DC *and* NY would try to use Manafort as a way of hurting DJT. I’ve never been to Rikers but the word is it doesn’t resemble a country club.I’d love to hear what,if anything,NY State prosecutors have to say about this.

Good luck getting anyone released from federal custody to state custody. The feds usually just throw the writs in the trash.

He will get pardoned the day after the next presidential election.

Which will do nothing for the State charges he is about to face, which is why he was being transferred to a State institution.

I agree; but, we must remember that we are dealing with New York. It's like California without the nice weather.

The problem is Mueller and the leftist NY AG have orchestrated a State felony charge. Trump can issue a pardon or commutation for Federal crimes but not for State crimes.

The DOJ can investigate how and why Manafort is being charged with state crimes. I suspect the New York City Prosecutor Cyrus Vance will want he and his office to be the subject of a real investigation regarding its decision to attempt to prosecute Manafort.

The state charge against Manafort are going to be dropped. It's either that, or the feds will initiate an investigation regarding corruption in the office of the NYC prosecutors office; and they will find plenty of evidence.
