i cook all the time. while i will go out to get a quick sandwich, it pains me to get steaks in a restaurant when i can do it better and much cheaper.
In the South, Publix delivers groceries to your home for a very small fee... A dozen eggs, bacon, bread, butter, cereal, yogurt and donuts delivered it MUCH cheaper than 'breakfast' at McDonalds for 5 mornings...
What gets me is that the federal leeches take the social security out of my pay which is taxed. Then when they give a tiny amount of it back (social security), they take taxes out a second time.
That sounds like double taxing to me.
Medicare is contributory.
Medicaid is welfare.
I’ll have the soup.
LOL, and when a Rat is in the White House, unemployment becomes “Funemployment”.
I have chickens too.
All you need is about 4 and one rooster, and you have a never-ending supply of eggs and food.
Every 21 days you can hatch a dozen more. 8-12 weeks later you cull the roosters and keep hens for eggs. When they get old you butcher them for soup chickens.
I have not purchased eggs or chicken in 2 years, and I spend about $25 a month on feed.
I’ve sold dozens of eggs. And given away eggs and frozen chicken to my children.
I am somewhat familiar with SNAP aka Food Stamps here in Texas. Last time I checked about a year ago the max benefit per person is close to $59 per week. Let’s say for whatever reason you don’t get the max benefit but $40 per week. You are not going to eat steak, fancy organic grown stuff, chips, Cheetos and other snacks, but you can have a very nice balanced diet for that amount. You do need access to a decent store and not be in a “food desert”. That is HEB (central, South and Southeast, Texas chain), WalMart, Kroger and some others.
And the ironic part is that calorie restriction helps one live longer.
Euell Gibbons would have proud.
You know what is good cheap breakfast?
Fry eggs in a splash of soy, dunk toasted baguette.
There is almost no real excuse for boomers to not have enough money for food. There is Social Security, pensions (if you didnt regularly job hop), IRAs and 401ks.
If your Boomer retirement plan was Social Security and my kids will take care of me, you are an idiot.
Side note: there are a significant number of retired Boomers who are having a portion of their SS checks withheld because they never paid off their college student loans. Incredible: They probably worked for 40 to 45 years after college, and they never paid off these loans.
Note to twenty-somethings out there....
Heres exactly when youll become a millionaire if you save $100 per month
Water and milk. No sugar.
Some old folks can no longer cook.
It is a simple thing I have done all mylife but I no longer have the energy to do it.
I wonder if they deliver in food deserts. It’s a serious question.
Same here. I sell my extra eggs at work for $2 a dozen. It pays for the feed.
We did make one mistake. Our dogs and chickens comingle in our yard. They have all gotten along find. Well, we offed our last rooster and, about a month later, our Golden retriever got a taste for raw chicken. We only lost three - and the dog, of course.
We may give up chickens for a while, but if we decide to keep them, we’ll want to add a rooster, partly to fertilize the eggs.
“old roy” is cheaper.
Just add water, it makes its own sauce!
I’m almost 75. We raise chickens too.
We eat chicken roasted, baked, BBQed, fried, chicken enchaladas, chicken salad, chicken stock/noodle soup, sesame chicken, chicken with dumplings, or in rice casseroles. The list goes on. A whole chicken goes a long way and can be used in many ways.
We even compost the chicken **** for the garden and anything left over the cat gets.
And our chickens lay eggs too. Thank GOD I’m a country boy.
