Hawley, Cruz urge Trump to nix judicial nominee who compared Catholic beliefs to KKK views

Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz — both Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee — are calling on President Trump to withdraw the nomination of a lawyer for a lifetime federal court appointment, accusing the nominee of opposing religious freedom and expressing anti-Catholic views.

The nomination of Michael S. Bogren, a Michigan lawyer who was nominated to be a district judge for the District Court for the Western District of Michigan, has been met with fierce conservative resistance for the candidate’s likening of religious beliefs to the racist views of the Ku Klux Klan.

Hawley, a Missouri Republican and a former state attorney general, wrote in an op-ed for the National Review that “the right to religious free exercise enshrined in the First Amendment is the fundamental freedom, and we need judges who will uphold it,” adding that “Michael Bogren’s answers are not acceptable for a judicial nominee. We can and must do better.”

Cruz, a Texas Republican, issued his view in a Twitter message Friday.

“Agree. I’m a NO,” the senator wrote. “And POTUS should withdraw this nomination.”

Totally agree. This nominee SHOULD be withdrawn. Trump nominated him in consultation with Senators Peters and Stabenow so naturally they picked the most liberal "republican" nominee they could find in a stealth move.

Bogren donated to Feed Upton in his primary fight. That's really all you need to know about him. He'd be a David Router on the bench.

Senate: reject! Trump: withdraw!

Imagine if in his “legal brief” he had criticized Muslim beliefs the way he bashed Catholic teaching.

I agree with you and Sen. Cruz. President Trump withdraw the nomination. Bogren’s statements are wrong. He should not be a District Judge after making those statements.

I agree that this clown is a Souter in the making. One of those nominal Republicans without a judicial record by which he can be judged for the position and once appointed we are stuck with a left wing liberal on the bench. Democrats do not have such judicial candidates. They all consistently stick with left wing principles never veer from them despite the fact that they may be unconstitutional. Republicans, on the other hand, abound with hidden left wing candidates like this piece of garbage.

For the record, his client was the City of East Lansing and the case involved a Catholic farmer who would not allow a same-sex marriage on his land citing religious beliefs.

His analogy was to compare the farmer’s actions to a member of the KKK refusing to allow inter-racial marriages.

Probably wishes he could get a do-over on that one.

Trump better smack this nominee down no matter who he consulted with he didn't get all the facts.

Seems like Melania might like to know this dolt thinks Catholics are no different than KKK members. The fact of the matter is that the Klan hated Catholics and Jews as nearly as much if not as much as they hated blacks. That goes to show you that the dolt nominee is ignorant of history and just throws out taunts that please the NeverTrump RINO crowd.

Catholic zealots are all over this guy.

He made a reasonable argument. He wasn’t being anti-Catholic.

He was representing his client, not advocating their views.

The fact that these “farmers” were Catholic is irrelevant.

They could have been ANY faith that opposed same sex marriage. Catholics just have their panties in a wad.

I don’t know about this guy, but THIS should not disqualify him.

Comparing Catholics to the KKK is bad enough but (one could argue) it could be taken out of context. However, defending gay “marriage” is inexcusable and his nomination should be withdrawn. It’s too bad our system is set up for a life time appointments so you can never be too careful (especially since Judges overrule our democracy fairly often)

What's a liberal like you doing on this site? Thanks for the leftist view on the situation.
Destructive behavior is discouraged by Christianity. That's why homosexual acts are condemned. Comparing that to the KKK which opposed natural marriage and peoples is a standard leftist tactic. The fact that this lawyer took this argument into court says all any conservative needs to know about him.

Don’t know his religion if any, but he was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu - the National Jesuit Honor Society.

Work with swamp-dwellers, get more swamp. We don't need any members of the federal judiciary with anti-Christian prejudices.

I am a Catholic, and I would just as vehemently oppose his nomination if he used Mormons, Evangelicals, Orthodox Jews or even Muslims in his argument, if it is that opposing counterfeit marriage is the same as having a problem with black people. Black people should especially be offended (proper time to be offended) at being considered as equivalent to perverts.
