Louisiana’s Governor Signs 'Heartbeat' Abortion Bill Into Law. He's a Democrat.

Louisiana’s Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards angered members of his own party on Thursday when he signed a ban on abortions once a heartbeat is detected.

"I call on the overwhelming bipartisan majority of legislators who voted for it to join me in continuing to build a better Louisiana that cares for the least among us and provides more opportunity for everyone," he said in a statement.

The ban on abortions once a heartbeat is detected could apply to pregnancies as early as six weeks. The only exceptions are for “medically futile” cases where the mother’s health is at risk or the baby is stillborn. No exceptions are included for cases of rape or incest.

Democrats, including 2020 presidential candidates, expressed outrage over the governor signing the legislation.

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) all weighed in.

Regardless of your personal beliefs, no politician—Republican or Democrat—has the right to control women’s bodies or involve themselves in women’s health care decisions. Governor John Bel Edwards is turning his back on Louisiana women by signing this shameful bill. https://t.co/PdObQ2JZCT— Kirsten Gillibrand (@SenGillibrand) May 30, 2019

The Democratic governor of Louisiana is signing draconian anti-abortion legislation today. This is an outrage. Regardless of party, we must vigorously defend a woman's constitutional right to control her own body. https://t.co/Bv1fcVEuhi— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) May 30, 2019

Dangerous attacks on women’s constitutional right to an abortion are outrageous no matter what party you’re in. My message to the Gov. of Louisiana: women have agency, women have value, women have authority to make decisions about their own lives—and we will not go backward. https://t.co/oi7vgy90ej— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) May 30, 2019

Louisiana is now the fifth state to enact a law banning abortions once a heartbeat is detected, joining Ohio, Georgia, Mississippi, and Kentucky. Alabama’s law goes even further, outlawing nearly all abortions.

The law in Louisiana will only take effect if Mississippi’s similar law, which was blocked by a federal judge, is upheld in court.

There used to be a lot more pro-life Democrats. Bel Edwards is one of the few left.

Watch for the NFL's next left-ass-kissing move -- prohibiting the SuperBowl from being played in states with restrictive abortion laws.

So now will the Hollywood idiots, and other assorted radical types, call for a boycott of Louisiana?? Will various celebrities claim Louisiana is unsafe for women?

He knows Who he ultimately answers to. Jesus already has won the victory and there is a judgment day for everyone.

He’s counting on the court to overturn it.

Edwards very much wants to be reelected. He won due to the fluke that many La GOPers didn't like or were afraid of David Vitter so they split the vote with a spoiler candidate as the Warner GOPers did in Va with North. Edwards suspects his opponent will be the current AG who is both young and a real gut fighter who goes out of his way to show his contempt for the media or Rep Abraham a movement conservative. Edwards has been clever in avoiding acting like the nation demrats and is trying hard to engage in a balancing act to keep the rat vote and pick up swing voters (mostly former rat voters who can't stomach the Landrieu types. He has a tough race. Republican voters outnumber rats on election day.

The NFL? No. But it was relatively easy to give up on wasting three hours a week sixteen times a year watching the Detroit Lions. And that was before the "protests", which were and are merely racist tantrums by black racists: ^)

"There used to be a lot more pro-life Democrats. Bel Edwards is one of the few left."

I'd like to think I'm wrong, but I suspect Edwards is more "pro-Edwards," than he is, "pro-Life." This is a gubernatorial election year in Louisiana and a veto of this bill would have had him bounced out of Baton Rouge on a rail. I hope he signed it for the best of reasons, I'm glad he signed it for any reason, but I suspect that had the voters of Louisiana been more apathetic about the issue, or leaned pro-death, he would have gone with the flow of his party.

I understand congressman Ralph Abraham M.D. (R) is running against Edwards (D) in the upcoming election for governor of Louisiana. A lot of Louisianans are going to weigh, very closely, what this governor has done against what congressman Abraham has done/accomplished.

This is serious business in the South, where Southerners have abandoned the Democratic party for what the Republican party now stands for. I believe Eisenhower (R) started it and Reagan (R) completely captured the South for the Republican party.

Outcome of November elections in Louisiana will be interesting and informative.
