Does it seem you hear a little bit less about political controversies in the sports world than you did a year or two ago? Do you find yourself grumbling at your television, I just want to enjoy watching the game less frequently?
Todays Los Angeles Times profiles ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro, who took over running the network in March 2018. Deep in the article:
Pitaro has also satisfied ESPNs more traditional fans by steering commentators away from political discussions on-air and on social media, which heightened during President Trumps criticism of NFL player protests against social injustice during the playing of the national anthem.
11 Without question our data tells us our fans do not want us to cover politics, Pitaro said. My job is to provide clarity. I really believe that some of our talent was confused on what was expected of them. If you fast-forward to today, I dont believe they are confused.
This does not mean that political controversies are gone completely, or will never return to the sports world. Some members of championship teams choose to not attend ceremonies at the White House. The political comments or Tweets of collegiate or pro athletes will continue to generate controversy for content-hungry sports media. But some of the most politically-active sports commentators have moved on to other things.
Jemele Hill has moved from anchoring the 6 p.m. SportsCenter to writing for The Atlantic. Bob Costas departed NBC Sports after 40 years. And Keith Olbermann is not the media force he once was; hes now grumbling that MSNBCs Rachel Maddow and Steve Kornacki havent shown enough gratitude towards him.

The mere existence of Jamele Hill on your network has poisoned the well for at least two decades. Who would go back to watching after such an in-your-face display of contempt for white Americans as putting her in any role of importance?
uuuuuhhhhhh, No $hit Dick Tracy, but you still had to pee on that electric fence a few times before you finally came to that conclusion, didn’t you.
This is the antithesis to get woke, go broke. Someone at ESPN saw that happening and brought in new leadership to turn things around, is what this looks like. A welcome sign.
LOL. Unbelievable gaslighting. Literally last week I saw ESPN on in a restaurant and they were pushing “criminal justice reform” on a program. AKA Christmas for Criminals. I guess liberal orthodox is not “politics” to the cultural Marxists running ESPN.
Doh!... That took way to long for ESPN to figure out.
Like movie stars and other celebs... The opinions of sports figures and commentators really do not matter to the common people. Their ratings are down the tubes and will continue that way until they cover sports... That’s kind of why they existed in the first place.
Our internet provider is Comcast Business, and the picture quality seems to get better with each update.
It is a very fast and stable internet platform.
At first we had some delays in getting a video picture, and that has been eliminated.
Our tv is 4 years old and the picture is excellent.
We did the same and we are saving over $200/month.
“I am one of those millions who were paying $6 a month to ESPN from my cable bill. I cut the cord specifically because I no longer was going to support them or CNN, MSNBC, PBS, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc. Never going back. They lost me forever. I am free at last.”
What a freaking genius
I wont do business with Comcast. Partly due to MSNBC. Partly due to having worked for Comcast. I was talking to a customer on the phone and had to mute a tv in the next cubicle that was unoccupied. It had some ghetto movie where every third word was the effenheimer. I did not need that bleeding over into a business call. That got me fired, with the manager calling me a racist white mfer.
People love to hear ignorant know nothing jocks ramble on with poor opinions.
Especially when we compare jock ignorance to other well formed smart talkers in a competition of ideas.
Let me simplify.
Jock is stupid.
Seasoned talker is smart.
Why stay tuned to ESPN? NEVER.
Alex Jones dominates you.
Rush Limbaugh crushes ESPN dicks.
Dennis Prager destroys you.
David Knight humiliates Sports losers.
ESPN are losers.
I know ESPN is low IQ. But this makes sense. Jocks are losers.
“But we’re going to do it anyway.”
Great comment. That is right. Each of us consumers are evolving to pay only for a Connection only.
It is the consumer’s money to choose what they want on that connection. Whether your cellphone or TV entertainment, it is not the connection company who should decide what to watch.
I welcome the evolution to busybody free internet connections.
I just discovered Pluto TV for nanny free mindless movies.
Too late, ESPN.
You are forever on my sh!t list.
5 years now with an antenna, and I’m perfectly happy.
Just shut up and show the damn games.
Also, we don’t want to hear women announcing College Football games.
National Review can kiss off too.
I belie e he got the wrong message. By covering politics we began to see who they (ESPN) really were. And they can cover all of the politics they want.
We just don’t want ESPN. We have seen who you really are and we reject you out of hand!!!
Just go away.
You’re just now figuring this out, Sherlock?
Not for years.
Which sports do you like?
Hockey.
Frankly ESPN is going to fall under the "to little, to late" category. This is unfortunate for them.
But you have to wonder what brainiac thought mixing sports with politics was a GOOD idea.
