Because Manafort may well have been a plant by the Russians, who quite conceivably had their pro-Russia friends in the Ukraine "leak" the news to the press about him (Manafort) having worked for Putin's stooge in the Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych. It's all making a lot of sense now.
