Not necessarily in this case because the Presidential election is a local, state election in each state created individually by each legislature.

I’d think with some states giving electoral based on popular vote that he’d have to be on the ballot even it only counted toward pop vote total.

Of course they canand do. Last two Senate elections in California featured no Republicans on the ballotand write-in votes are prohibited.
