About 200 US companies seeking to move manufacturing base from China to India

Washington: About 200 American companies are seeking to move their manufacturing base from China to India post the general elections, a top US-based advocacy group has said, observing that there is a fantastic opportunity with firms looking at alternatives to the Communist giant.

The US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum's (USISPF) President Mukesh Aghi said that the companies are talking to them about how to set up an alternative to China by investing in India.

Aghi said that USISPF’s recommendation to the new government would be to accelerate the reforms and bring transparency in the decision-making process.

“I think that's critical. We would advise to bring more transparency in the process and to make it more consultative because in the last 12 to 18 months, we are seeing US companies look at some of the decisions being made, either e-commerce or data localisation, as more domestic-oriented than global," he told PTI in an interview.

In his reply to what the agenda of the new Indian government should be to attract investment, Aghi suggested that New Delhi needs to accelerate reforms, be more transparent in the process and engage more.

“We need to understand how we can attract those companies. And that means all the way from land issues to customs issues to being part of the global supply chain. Those are critical issues. There’s a whole plethora of reforms that need to go further down, and I think that is also going to create a lot of jobs," he said.

He said that Mark Linscott, the former Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asian Affairs, is working with USISPF member companies to come up with a recommendation as to what India needs to do to enhance its exports and work up from that perspective.

I’m sure China would be happy to see them go just as long as they live all of their equipment, manufacturing processes and trade secrets behind. Save them the trouble of stealing it in other ways.

Yeah exactly. Maybe Trump could have a talk with some of them.

I know at least some of amazon’s customer service is in India, but at least they’re hiring bright people that actually can speak English well, have a sense of our culture, and actually help you with your problem.

First time that’s ever happened to me.

True, but as long as they’re not in China anymore, I’m ok with it. Starve that paper tiger into oblivion.

This has been going on for about 5 years already.

I have watched several manufacturers switch from China to India. China labor costs are too high.

India also offers far better engineering, software and other skilled trades that China did not have until recently.

This is capitalism at work....economically lift a region, lift wages and let the bottom feeders go to another undeveloped market to lift them up.

Capitalism has lifted billions out of poverty and changed society without firing a single bullet.

It will lift India as well. The challenges are large with the caste system and limited IP and liability protections currently in place. But once they taste the money, they will make the changes.

Please. If they’re in China, it’s already been stolen.

India has several advantages over China - lower labor costs, faster population growth, higher skill/academic vibrancy (second highest producer of Ph.D.s, aftter the USA), and widespread English language ability. They are a real democracy - an open society.

They also have religion and religious morality very much still alive. In China, it has been harshly suppressed for generations - bred out of many people. That is a reason that theft is so widespread (routine) there.

Government policy is the biggest obstacle in India - bureaucratic and protectionist. If they can fix that, they have a historic development opportunity, to attract the exodus from China.

Just ask the businesses to draft the rules they need - fastest way. They can review them for attempted cheats, but they will get the whole set of best practices quickly given to them for review. The Government needs to gear up to respond at the speed of business, and involve real successful business people.

I could NOT know less about the Indian government than I do right now. The only way is up :)

So if this is India’s problem, then yes, you’re right.

Get some business folks involved and get moving.

Or lose an historic opportunity.

“Skip India, move to the US.”

My thoughts exactly! Until I realized one of the reasons Mexican labor in the US is popular. Not just because a Mexican will work for 10 cents on the dollar, but because our youngest generation in terms of skill, knowledge and ability are the most worthless thing since tits on a bull.

Our nations workforce has really been hurt by millennials. I’ve had several experiences with these kids. The word is “incompetent”.

It’s always been about finding the world’s cheapest labor. China too expensive now. Lot’s of clothing now labeled “Made in Bangladesh”.

The Great China Experiment is an EPIC FAIL, it would appear.

And yet the Bush family is somehow managing to escape all accountability.

I think infrastructure in India will be one of the weak points that keep those dreams from becoming reality.

This really does nothing to help Americans and American wages. For me there is nothing to get excited about. It’s like moving from queens to the Bronx. A lateral toilet move.
