A Tale of 2 Singers and More Triggering 'Racism'

As singers, Kate Smith and Paul Robeson have something in common. They each recorded the song, “That’s Why Darkies Were Born.”

At NJ.com, Paul Mulshine accurately describes the song as “written from a standpoint of sympathy for Southern blacks,” which helps explains why Robeson, a black communist, sang the song as well. To read the lyrics is to understand how perverse is an out-of-nowhere attack on the beloved Ms. Smith.

“Someone had to fight the Devil/ Shout about Gabriel’s Horn/ Someone had to stoke the train/ That would bring God’s children to green pastures/ That’s why darkies were born.”

Substitute “people of color” for “darkies” and the song could be sung today as a tribute to black perseverance in times of trial. In fact, Robeson’s version was included on the album “Great Voices of the Century” recorded in 1992 and currently being sold through Amazon and Spotify.

No matter, kowtowing to the neighborhood Red Guard, the Philadelphia Flyers removed Smith’s statue and the New York Yankees banned her iconic rendition of Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.”

How hard did someone have to research Kate Smith to find that minor song?

And if we researched every other figure of the past (including “people of color”), what would we find?

If we get rid of everything that offends somebody, there won’t be anyone left.

I also demand that we remove Paul Robeson statues and rename anything named after him, because he sang that song also.

Is it reasonable to hold people of the past to our contemporary moral sensibilities or are we all just products of our own time? Will future generations condemn us for practices regarding race or class or gender that we consider perfectly acceptable today? What will they say about our practice of legalized abortion or use of fossil fuels? I’m not sure we will stand up to future standards any better than the past does to ours.

If that statue is not restored I would seriously think about leaving Philadelphia ....before it is too late. This act is a seed, planted in the fertile soil of envy and resentment. The cancer of hate is spreading throughout our society, and if these actions are not forcefully and intelligently rebuked America will be destroyed. I have heard from my elders how that eighty years ago those living in the growing darkness of baseless hatred kept saying “Oh it wou’t get that bad! This too shall pass. Just cooperate, that’s how we’ll get through this!” We all know how that turned out. The time to rise up and fight is NOW!

Will they study how blacks kill whites in our time, and nothing is said about it ? We live in such a dumb time. Phony, everything done to keep our money masters happy.

I don’t think Texas will do the same to Bob Wills because of his lyrics in his songs.

“That’s what I Like About the South”
or
Take Me Back To Tulsa (Let me off on Archer and I’ll walk down to Greenwood). Archer and Greenwood were the center of the black section of Tulsa, burned in the 1921 riots.

Didn’t she quit singing that song long before the Yankees hired a black player or coach?
