Officials warn of new drug 100 times more potent than fentanyl
CBS ^ | April 16, 2019 | CBS News

Officials in San Diego County have issued an alert after three people have suffered documented fatal overdoses from a new form of the drug fentanyl know as carfentanil. It would only take 2 mg of the drug to cause a deadly overdose meanwhile it would only take .02 mg of carfentanil to have the same fatal results, CBS Sacramento reported.

Langdon Fielding is an emergency veterinarian at Loomis Basin Equine. He said he uses fentanyl on horses for pain relief.

"Basically it's super strong morphine-like a really strong drug to control pain," said Fielding.

Carfentanil is similar to fentanyl but twice as strong and used in large animals like horses and elephants widely in zoos.

According to the DEA in San Diego County, it is sold in the illegal drug trade and often mixed into a pill to look like Oxycontin or Xanax. Users don't often know what they're taking or where it's coming from. Veterinarians like Fielding aren't surprised it's linked to criminal activity.

"It's even stronger than Fentanyl, so like if you had a motivation to steal either morphine or fentanyl, carfentanil would be that much stronger," said Langdon. "It's like a really concentrated dose of a similar type of drug so I would think the potential to want to steal it would be even higher."

The DEA has quick facts about carfentanil, stressing that it's a synthetic opioid, white, powdery and looks like cocaine or heroin. It's 100 times more potent than fentanyl and trace amounts can kill you.

There’s already enough fentanyl being brought across the border to kill every last person twice over in the USA, but hey, it’s not an national emergency. It’s only a national emergency after people are mass killed in one attack.

Potency and lethality are not the same. It's a dangerous drug, and IS 100x more potent than fentanyl in relieving pain, but it is less lethal in rats than fentanyl.

It will be 911 times 2356.

Chris:
My god, that's... I don't even know what that is!

We should use it in executions...

At least then we wouldn’t have to deal with virtue signaling drug mfgs.

I am much more concerned about busfentanil and planefentanil. I believe the Chinese are working on deathstarfentanil: just one molecule will kill everyone on the planet.

Heck, it’s not new.

Carfentanil has been killing addicts in Ohio for a couple of years now.

You don’t have to do it. Someone can put it on a surface or use an aerosol distribution as a terrorist weapon.

I think every time EMT’s have to use Narcan to revive a druggie, they should be required to tattoo a big red X on their forehead....next time they get called, nobody with an X gets treated.

Harsh, but it will solve a big part of the drug problem .

The LSM warned fentynol was a gazillion times more potent than heroin and trace amounts can kill you. Now this new drug is 100 times more potent than fentynol (yes, I know, spelling is off; I don't care).

At this rate, someone will synthesize a narcotic that will make you high just by saying its name.

I’m not sure why but the first thought that came in my mind was this could be used for assassinations.
