The Department of Defense awarded its first contracts to two companies Tuesday for construction of a barrier along the U.S. border with Mexico, according to a notice posted on the DOD’s website.
The Galveston, Texas-based company SLSCO was awarded a $789 million contract for “border replacement wall construction” in Santa Teresa, N.M., while Barnard Construction Co., a firm based in Bozeman, Mont., received a contract worth $187 million for “pedestrian wall replacement” in Yuma, Ariz., the DOD’s website stated.
Nearly two months after President Trump declared a national emergency to secure funding for the construction of his border wall, the contracts represent the first issued by the Department of Defense.
A letter received by Congress from the DOD dated March 27 stated that “to date, no DoD funds have been obligated on contracts or task orders for the purpose of constructing a border wall.”
This piece of information was among several details included in a letter that Rep. Anthony Brown, D-Md., vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee, received Tuesday from Kenneth Rapuano, assistant secretary for homeland defense and global security at the Department of Defense.

Hear! Hear! And guess what those ol’ medievalist did? They pitched rocks at the interlopers, hunted them with pitch forks and used bows with real arrows to make them go away.
Why can’t we do something like that? We are NOT our brothers’ keeper and, frankly, I have no interest in anything having to do with illegal immigrants except to keep them out. They are not a benefit to us and I make too little money to make a contribution to an grifter and freeloader of the illegal kind.
This is great, and about darned time.
The thing is, in another, earlier article about these two wall sections, it mentioned the wall at least in some section would be 18 feet high.
Not 30 feet. Is that the case, and if so, why?

Another example of a wall that worked is the Great Wall of China. It is nearly a wonder of the world. It stands there today in full use.

Why name the recipients of the contracts? All it does is fuel the crazies - I predict a bunch of loons outside of each of these companies as early as tomorrow!
Some areas had such crap you have to consider this to be “new wall”. For example, some of the existing wall was made of old landing mats surplussed after the Vietnam war.
And the bigger caravans are forming up.
Mexico is not stopping the caravans?

Pretty much everywhere that needs barrier, already has something there, even if it is just triple strand barbed wire for the cattle.
The main exceptions are likely to be in the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo, in Southern Texas. Congress funded 33 NEW miles there in 2018 (work was announced to start there last Thursday (4 Apr 19). They also recently funded 55 more NEW miles there, in the 2019 appropriation. Those 88 New miles will get close to completing the Rio Grande Valley. Laredo probably needs about 50 miles as well.
Beyond those segments, you have to dig deep into the priority list to find more new miles. A few gaps here and there, maybe some chunks that are easy (like the Military’s Goldwater Test Range, or a National Park). Another possible special case is the Tohono O’odham Reservation in Arizona - lots of drugs make there way through their open land now.
I am guessing that it will be about two (or more) replacement miles for every totally NEW mile, for the next year or two. A lot of it is really just semantics. As you point out, it is really the traffic that matters. If there is high traffic, they need better wall system.
