I don’t get it. I don’t get the desire for the status of saying your kids went to Ivy League or other prestigious colleges such as Stanford.

I’ve heard that once you are in a career field, that nobody cares where you went to college.

I’ve worked with many top notch professionals, who went to colleges that were not prestigious, and some I had never heard of. Yet they had the requisite degrees in the professional field to embark on their career. They didn’t need to go to Harvard to be successful in a career.

Well, at least insofar as my career was concerned, having an engineering degree from one of the top Engineering Schools in the country was definitely a door opener for the positions I sought. Several companies wanted to review my college transcripts to see just how good a student I actually was. But some accepted the fact of my graduation as evidence of my understanding of my field.

I think it makes these idiot parents feel good and look good in the public arena.

It about the connections the kids they will make, not the education.

They are set for life when they are friends with the right people.

This is true for the vast majority of jobs out there.

However, the massive law firms, private equity firms, hedge funds and top executive level (CEO, Chairman) at the mega international corporations...where you went to school means a lot more. It's part of continuing to be in the club.

I don’t get it either. Just at lunch at my work I just saw a 60 year old guy walking around in a blue blazer and a Yale baseball hat.

These parents are all people in some kind of competition against their peers, relatives, neighbors, friends, etc. Saying your kid went to University of Wisconsin, doesn’t measure up to Wake Forest. Or telling your neighbor that your kid got accepted to the track and field program at USC....while they just never show up for any competitions. These rich folks all had money ‘to burn’.

But this ought to lead people to ask....are we giving out fake degrees to people who can’t handle the school work? You know....like AOC and her economics degree. Or how about Bush and his degree? Or Obama and his degree?

Oh come on.

Your post is like saying “as long as you’re driving a functioning car, it doesn’t matter if you’re driving a Toyota Corolla or a Bentley.”

The perception differential is enormous. Yes, I agree, once you are in a position and can demonstrate competence, nobody looks at your degree. But the white-glove degree gets you in the door and gives you all the opportunity in the world to demonstrate INcompetence, generally with no consequence.

Put it this way: The HR guy who hires the Stanford grad has not made a mistake if the hiree does not work out. But if the HR guy hires a guy from Snarfball U, then he’s made a serious error.

This falls under “fundamentals of industrial sales”. The inside decision-maker guy has to be able to make a justifiable decision.

These are not kids looking for a career. This is the ruling class aristocracy who use their education ala Hitler.

True, but this isn't about the kids.

This is about bragging rights for the parents.

"My daughter is in Harvard, Buffy!"

"Wonderful! Our youngest was just accepted at Yale! More chardonnay?"

Because it is a guarantee of entre into the privileged class. They hire each other, marry each other, and help each other cheat to get ahead.
