... western New York state ... assemblyman ... David DiPietro [R-East Aurora] ... last month ... introduced a bill that would divide New York into three autonomous regions, each controlled by its own governors and legislatures. He argues that what works for New York City is dragging the rest of the state into economic oblivion...

The thread title is from the print edition of the paper, where it was a front page story. The newspaper's website headline is a bit different: "New Yorkers frustrated with Democratic dominance push bill to slice up state"

The guy’s idea, which has some merit....is not to split into three states, but to have one state with three ‘autonomous’ districts, each with a governor and their own legislature. It’d still have two senators as always, but each region would be able to handle their own problems. He’s admitting....NY City is a stumbling block for the rest of the state.

It’s actually not a bad idea, and if it could work in NY, then it’d work in California as well.

Nope, his bill...doesn’t lead to dividing the state into three states. His intention is to have three districts inside of NY, and each having ‘governor’ and legislature. Most everyone in north and west NY state will openly put the problem of the state upon NY City and the rest of the state is unable to function or avoid the potential bankruptcy coming.

70% of NYS tax revenue comes from NYC and the surrounding counties. So this guy can STFU, IMHO.

The idea has some merit. Sort of like mega-counties. States are free to organize themselves within the bounds of their state constitution. I’d use a term other than governor, though.

That’s the problem. Allow fracking, lower taxes, become a right to work state and the rest of the state will prosper.

I can think of nothing better than being separate from New York City. They already proved that in any election, if 100% of the rest of NY voted for something and NYC voted differently, then NYC always wins.
Living in Western New York, I have no vote.

Illinois would sure benefit from it too.

“70% of NYS tax revenue comes from NYC and the surrounding counties.”
That shows how economically depressed the rest of the state is, and how badly it has been neglected.

Just donate NYC to the People’s Democratic Republic of New Jersey. Rename it New Jersey City. Both states would be greatly improved.

Yup. People who think it would never work assume Upstate would pull the same boners Albany and Downstate have.

Of course, NYC (and the suburbs which would become “Montauk”, as well) pays significantly more in in taxes than they receive back in expenditures from the state, too. “New Amsterdam” might get to duck some regulations, but it would also lose massive amounts of funding:

I fully support fracking. NY's problem is Cuomo (and the rest of the Democrats). He despises NYC (specifically its Mayor) and ignores the rest of the state. Taxes are both pushing rich people out of NYC and keeping businesses from opening in ANY part of the state.

The Dems never thought the rich would leave NYS, but they are leaving. The Dems never thought financial companies would leave Wall Street, but they are leaving. And so am I.

Breaking off SE Pennsylvania from the rest would be another case where this would be beneficial.

Don't discount libs long term ideas. 3 regions would begin to look like 3 states. so why not just formalize it. you gotta think ahead like they do!!

Unless you want to give newyawk 6 senators!!!!!

Sounds like a plan as long as their representation in the swamp does not increase nor does the electoral college get affected. Maybe more of these yankee socialists will stay home instead of coming to Texas.
