Cardinal George Pell has been found guilty of sexual offences in Australia, making him the highest-ranking Catholic figure to receive such a conviction.
The verdict was handed down in December, but it could not reported until now due to legal reasons.
Pell is due to be sentenced on Wednesday. His lawyers say he will appeal against the conviction.
As Vatican treasurer, the 77-year-old cardinal is one of the Church's most powerful officials.
His trial was heard twice last year because a first jury failed to reach a verdict.
A second jury unanimously convicted him of one charge of sexually penetrating child under 16, and four counts of committing an indecent act on a child under 16....

Cardinal Pell supported the traditional Latin Mass. The Vatican set him up to take the fall for this.

Cardinal Pell may have been framed; in his case — contrary to many others — the charges may be fake.
Yes, I think you’re right. Cardinal Pell is one of the most orthodox bishops. I suspect the Aussie politicians are doing a kangaroo court on him.
Pope Francis was determined to get rid of Pell when Pell starting closing all the "slush" accounts at the IOP (Vatican Bank) and brought in PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) to audit that whole termite-hill of fixers and financial shapeshifters.
Even secular ("no-friend-of-the-Church") observers in Australia say it was a ginned-up media witch-hunt from the beginning. The Peronist Pope threw Pell to the wolves.
A lot of legal opinion here in Australia is that Cardinal Pell will be cleared on appeal - as happened to another former Catholic Archbishop recently (the former Archbishop of Adelaide).
It is probably impossible for a fair trial of a senior Catholic cleric to occur in Australia in the current climate - and Pell was tried more or less in secret, and tried twice for the same crimes (the first trial ended with a hung jury).
