Coast Guard Officer Accused of Terrorist Plot Targeting Media, Lawmakers

A Coast Guard lieutenant assigned to the service's headquarters in Washington, D.C., has been arrested on drug and gun possession charges, and is accused of plans to "murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country," according to documents filed in Maryland District Court.

Lt. Christopher Paul Hasson, an acquisitions officer for the National Security Cutter Acquisition Program, was arrested Feb. 15 and charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition by an unlawful user or addict of controlled substances, and possession of Tramadol, a Schedule IV pain medication.

A motion for detention pending trial, filed by U.S. Attorney Robert K. Hur, paints a much more menacing portrait of Hasson's crimes and planned crimes.

"The current charges, however, are the proverbial tip of the iceberg," Hur wrote. "The defendant is a domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect government conduct."

Hur cited a draft email written by Hasson in June 2017 in which he said he was "dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth" using a "Spanish flu, botulism, anthrax" or some other mass toxin.

Another draft letter to a "known American neo-Nazi leader" identified Hasson as a white nationalist looking for an opportunity for "a little focused violence" to establish racial supremacy.

When Hasson was arrested in Silver Spring, Maryland, earlier this month, the document states, law enforcement agents found 15 firearms, including shotguns, rifles and handguns, and "conservatively, over 1,000 rounds of mixed ammunition."

A list of potential targets allegedly compiled by Hasson in January included "prominent Democratic congressional leaders, activists, political organizations, and MSNBC and CNN media personalities" including TV host Chris Hayes; House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California; Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia; Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York; and many others.

“Why do these people always write down/publicize their stupid plots?”

...because they want to be caught.

We’re not at the “Minority Report” level of government ... yet. My point was that millions of Americans have 15 or more firearms and more than 1000 rnds of ammo and a list for when the shtf - this doesn’t make them criminals. The drug stuff is a crime but the rest of it is speculation and tainting the jury pool - a time honored tradition among law enforcement.

Its not going to make you go out and kill anybody.

It made me have unkind thoughts about three in the morning the fourth night after I started taking it. Mostly because it was not working and going that long without restful sleep makes me cranky.

I was just thinking the same exact thing. If the pictures of his “arsenal” are accurate, he’s an amateur.

But, I also think this is BS. A person that want’s to do this, doesn’t advertise. More to this, I’m thinking. Could be wrong. I do not trust anyone in the FBI or DOJ with or about anything. Seems too convenient and timely, as someone else commented.

Hmmmmmmmm......mccabe admits to Pelley, in an interview, that the upper echelons of the FBI and DOJ were attempting to overthrow an election and oust the duly elected President of the United States....and.....BAMMMMM!!!!!!!...some “right wing” nobody is charged with a whole host of charges. Could be off base.

Quite possibly true. They probably even have a recording of the snitch talking about it and the guy nodding in agreement or something like that. Just like so many of their “terrorism” and “child porn” cases, that are bordering on entrapment, more than establishing PC and making a case. Be interesting to see what the evidence is or will they claim it a national security matter, so no one can see it? Not even his defense.

Or they are trying to give the guy street cred to infiltrate the ‘deplorables’.

I don’t know about that. My Mom was watching CBS last night (I know - ugh!) and they spent a LOT of time on it and as the lead story, too.

Mental illness strikes first, then comes an external cover which in this case might have been white nationalist beliefs. The key point is, all of this evidence shows clear signs of mental illness. Almost at random he could have chosen to manifest as a communist, Islamist, or maybe a radical environmentalist. The belief structures may be different but the propensity to violence is similar, so any of them would attract different nutjobs to their ranks.

In a nation of 350 million people with 70 million declaring support for one candidate for president, the odds of a few of those being out of their mind are not low, but very high. So it’s a nothingburger, really. For anyone with professional training in any social science to pretend that this could be applied as a generalization demonstrates either nefarious intent or gross incompetence.

We should note in passing that there would be a few similar nutjobs with affiliations with various political enemies, and that doesn’t prove anything about them either.
