Spy Betrayed U.S. to Work for Iran, Charges Say
The New York Times ^ | Feb. 13, 2019 | Adam Goldman

Inside the government, some officials called her “Wayward Storm.”

Her real name was Monica Elfriede Witt, an exemplary Air Force counterintelligence agent who had studied Persian and carried out covert missions in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

But by mid-2013, Ms. Witt had become disillusioned with the government — why, exactly, remains a mystery — and had left the military. Thoughts of betrayal consumed her, federal prosecutors now say, until she finally acted on them at the Iranian Embassy in Kabul, where they say she “told all.”

That indictment was made public on Wednesday as the Justice Department accused Ms. Witt, 39, of defecting to Iran in August 2013 to work with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in betrayal of the United States.

Ms. Witt has been charged with two counts of espionage and other crimes for what prosecutors said was her help to the Iranian government with spearfishing attempts that targeted her former colleagues. Investigators also said she provided the Iranians with secret details about American intelligence operations. She is believed to still be in Iran.

She was given high level clearance by the Obama administration. She was giving classified info to the Iranian government for years and defected to Iran in 2013. The government is just now getting around to prosecuting her.

She was probably working with many other government employees in the Obama administration to betray our country to Iran.

Her background is sufficient to have properly denied her clearance for that work.

YES!

Discrimination is PRESCRIBED in such cases!

From around 2009 to 2013, the U.S. intelligence community experienced crippling intelligence failures related to the secret internet-based communications system, a key means for remote messaging between CIA officers and their sources on the ground worldwide. The previously unreported global problem originated in Iran and spiderwebbed to other countries, and was left unrepaired — despite warnings about what was happening — until more than two dozen sources died in China in 2011 and 2012 as a result, according to 11 former intelligence and national security officials.

The disaster ensnared every corner of the national security bureaucracy — from multiple intelligence agencies, congressional intelligence committees and independent contractors to internal government watchdogs — forcing a slow-moving, complex government machine to grapple with the deadly dangers of emerging technologies.

She did this.

Benghazi attack, ObamaCare, "Fast and Furious" operation, uranium one, abuse of veterans, killing of Muammar al-Qaddafi, Libya weapons smuggling to Syria by Hillary...…….

So many reasons, pick one!

“She did this.”

I do not believe that this one person did this entirely by herself. She was a small part of the Obama administration policy to betray our intelligence assets and betray our country.

But it is very interesting that the Obama administration gave her a high level security clearance, refused to hinder her actions in any way and refused to prosecute her.

She was one small part of the treason by the Obama administration.

“But by mid-2013, Ms. Witt had become disillusioned with the government”

She was a spy and a traitor from the beginning. She was a part of the larger Obama administration treason.

She did not suddenly and mysteriously become “disillusioned.”

I believe this was answered in the article.

A person familiar with her case said she had grown disgruntled while working for the Air Force and at some point had become enamored with Persian culture and converted to Islam.

None of these things excuse, or even plausibly explain, selling us out to Iran.

Islam is incompatible with western culture.
Even the converts.

converted to Islam.

And there you have the explanation.

Islam is treason.

Well jeeze, at some point - lots and lots of points - I became disgruntled with “my” Navy. But it was still “my” Navy.

I agree with this entirely. The only scenario I could envision that involves her ‘switching sides’ unexpectedly in that manner would be if Iran targeted her with a romantic interest. More than a few women have been recruited to radical Islam in this manner.

If any member of the Obama Admin is involved, it's Valerie Jarrett. She has deep ties to Iran.

I agree but we are talking about a young person who was educated in our socialist school system. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, a master's from George Washington University.

George Washington University's International Affairs Review published two articles by Ms Witt in 2012. In one, she criticized the US for calling on Iran's neighbours to sever relations with Tehran.

"In enacting a policy of severe sanctions against Iran, the US should address the potential affects (sic) on other countries and not inadvertently alienate friends by making them choose between Iran and the US" wrote Ms Witt.

According to her online CV, she lived and worked within countries including Iraq, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, the UAE, Tajikistan and Iran.

So who knows but for an idealist believer the reality of the Obama actions may have been the turning point.
