Activision Blizzard cuts nearly 800 jobs amid ‘record results in 2018’
The Verge ^ | February 12, 2019 | Chaim Gartenberg

Activision Blizzard has announced that it’s laying off 8 percent of its employees — roughly 770 people — as part of the company “de-prioritizing initiatives that are not meeting expectations.”

The news came on the heels of announcement of Activision Blizzard’s Q4 and 2018 earnings, where CEO Bobby Kotick gave the company’s “record results in 2018.” Kotick went on to comment that, “While our financial results for 2018 were the best in our history, we didn’t realize our full potential.”

Twitter is smoking hot tonight about this. A lot of reaction from former employees and also competitors like 343 Industries (the Halo producers) advertising that they'll consider bringing them aboard.

AND Activision/Blizzard is a very desirable 'take over' target as well.
who'll win that bidding war?

Microsoft? Sony Interactive? Apple? Amazon?

That’s wonderful.

I would play missile command or space invaders again :)

I lean towards the lazy side and when the games seemed to get more complex that getting to the moon, I gave up :)

BUT I’m sure there are still simple action games for lazy folks like me and I’m just feeling TOO stodgy and old lately for 50.

What’s the best out there? Playstation? Ninteendo? Xbox?

Thanks

Okay, thanks. I would suspect those people move sales figures though. If others want them, they must be of some value.

Quick, somebody hire ALL of those guys.

They will make a billion dollar hit game, just to prove Activision was wrong to fire them!

You could literally buy a billion bucks for a couple million in wages....

Ohhh if I had the dough!

Amazon is trying to get into the video game business. Getting Activision/Blizzard would be a hella foot in the door.

What if Netflix decides to acquire Activision if it comes to that? A stretch certainly but it wasn't so long ago that nobody thought Netflix would be producing original smash hits like Stranger Things and full-length features.

And then it could be Disney. They honked off the Star Wars fans last week when it was announced that Electronic Arts was going to remain in charge of that franchise's games. Blizzard's talent behind a Star Wars game would be a dream come true for some.

They also hired a new CFO and gave him a $15 million bonus for doing nothing but breathing.
Sounds like they have skewed priorities in Activision/Blizzard.
(Of course they do. Just look at the sjw bs in their games recently.)

And you can lure monsters in Orb Vallis into the path of enemy coil drives and roadkill them.

I was thinking more HL2 (FPS).. personally don’t like 3rd person too much :/

Never heard of this one, downloading it now to check it out.

(Heard of it being possible for Linux, by any chance?)

I don’t go to Orb Vallis much because I have a potato PC and it stretches the resources to the limit. Planetside 2 is even worse, using very near 100% of both CPU and RAM.

I haven’t gamed on a console in years; I also tend to stick to a few games. I’m not interested in going from one game to another every six months or so.

Several AAA extremely arrogant video game companies are gonna flop real soon, and this is one of them.

We don’t have to put up with their crap.

If this is the first big RIF since the merger, there was likely a lot of deadwood to let go.

My son runs video game tournaments here in the US, usually once every quarter in the midwest.

Last time he had people drive in-—during the winter-—in the middle of snowstorms from Minnesota.

BTW, all:

Did you know that just before Trump brought Steve Bannon into his team he was one of the major partners in the Blizzard server farm companies in Asia?
