Northam Calls Slaves ‘Indentured Servants from Africa’

"Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort," Northam said

Embattled Virginia Governor, Ralph Northam (D-VA), referred to people that came to America as slaves from Africa as “indentured servants from Africa” during an interview with CBS News’ Gayle King on Sunday.

Northam sat down with King for his first interview since the Virginian-Pilot published a photo from Northam’s medical school yearbook showing “two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the same page as the governor.”

King asked Northam where he would like to begin, pointing out that it had been a difficult week for the people of Virginia.

“Well, it has been a difficult week, and you know if you look at Virginia’s history, we’re now at the 400-year anniversary. Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe,” Northam said

“Also known as slavery,” King interjected.

Go back thru this string of posts. Stick to that and again, the quip about hand-writing has nothing to do with a census recap. Whatever else you may have said on this forum thread makes no connection to that. Many of us follow exact replies to various posts, rather than necessarily the thing as a whole. I get your meaning with the whole, but replying to the census that way didn’t jibe.

What an insult!

Slaves were regarded as an investment that would pay dividends for the life of the one in bonds; therefore it was in the best interest of the slaveowner to try to ensure that his property lived as long a life as possible.

Indentured servants, on the other hand, were an expense. Expendible. Gone in seven years. So they could be treated harshly and d@mn near whipped to death...if they expired at 6 years and 11 months no real loss.

“...Indentured Servants from Africa...”

And so they were, at first. It wasn't until the middle of the 17th Century that chattel slavery was established by law in the English Colonies on the Mainland, and Virginia was one of the first to do so. Moreover, most of the first ‘African’ slaves came to the Mainland English Colonies from the Caribbean, not from Africa directly.

I thought so. So Northram is actually right, at least at the establishment of the first English colonies.

Actually it was prudent for a slaver to rotate cargo to the deck for sunshine and clean up etc

Keeping cargo alive meant more profit

There is a book on this by Hugh Crow dates I think from 1830

Course it’s dismissed in today’s climate

You mean Jim Crow laws, like the Black Code in Lincoln’s own Illinois? The one that wouldn’t allow free blacks to settle there.

I can see that you like your history to be simplistic, like candy.

Lincoln’s VP Andrew Johnson was a Democrat. There were Unionist Democrats who opposed the Confederacy, including Lincoln’s famous debating opponent Stephen Douglass.

The South wasn’t all Democrat, despite your illusions.

The South had Whigs. Whigs were the party from which the Republicans arose. John Tyler, 10th US President and member of the Confederate Congress, had been a Whig. As had John C Calhoun, maybe the most significant Antebellum statesman in the country.

The South had the Constitutional Union Party, which ran Tennessee’s John Bell in the 1860 election.

The Republicans weren’t all a party of abolitionists like their Radical Republican faction. Lincoln himself was considered a moderate who opposed the expansion of slavery into the Territories.

This is the Lincoln who wrote Horace Greeley:

” If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them.

Lincoln was waging war against fellow Americans to forcibly preserve the Union, not to abolish slavery. And in fact he never freed a slave in the North.

Frederick Douglass revisited all of this in his memorial to Lincoln, emphasizing that while he appreciated what Lincoln did, he understood that the fate of black Americans was an afterthought.

American political party history isn’t really the comic book version that you enjoy where all things evil feature the Democratic Party. But no one is going to force you give up that fantasy. Enjoy. Be ignorant and happy.

More of your sophistry and straw men. I made a crack about the Democrat Party's responsibility for slavery, an undeniable fact, and you come back with some self-aggrandizing non-sequiturs crafted with the primary aim of demonstrating what a professor of history you are.

The fact that you would choose a comment like mine to take issue with reflects on your lack of seriousness. You, sir a pathetic debater and a very small minded man.

By all means, continue on with your defense of Northam's comments based on the spurious idea that Africans knowingly and willingly signed contracts of indentured servitude.

Actually, Northam does seem to know his history. I read the continuation of the article. There was a link to indentured servants which I clicked. The last 2 paragraphs there were very interesting but did not allow me to transfer if off the page. So roughly what it said is when the first Africans were brought to VA in 1619, there were NO slave laws, so they used the laws of indenture, and the Africans had the same rights and responsibilities as did other indentured servants. This included receipt of land after the prescribed period ended successfully. However, settlers began to worry about them getting all this land, so slavery laws were passed in “liberal” Mass. in 1641, but the Virginians did not get around to it until 1661. So in VA, black indenture was the law for 42 years. Sounds like an interesting topic for more research.

You could shorten that to “why be interested in history when there is political hay to be made”.

He was not wrong.

Blacks brought to America in 1619 were indentured servants. Slavery did not begin for decades later, when a black man sued to keep his black indentured servant permanently.

The first mistake was when NoLibZone decided to post this, but failed to read the entire article and click the link regarding “indentured servants”. Had he/she read that link then the prudent thing would have been to do more Google searches, or not post the article and declare it false in the first place. While slavery started more than 100 years before the Declaration of Independence, there had been 42 years in Virginia when Africans were indentured servants, NOT slaves, which was established by law in 1661.
