Northam Calls Slaves ‘Indentured Servants from Africa’

"Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort," Northam said

Embattled Virginia Governor, Ralph Northam (D-VA), referred to people that came to America as slaves from Africa as “indentured servants from Africa” during an interview with CBS News’ Gayle King on Sunday.

Northam sat down with King for his first interview since the Virginian-Pilot published a photo from Northam’s medical school yearbook showing “two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the same page as the governor.”

King asked Northam where he would like to begin, pointing out that it had been a difficult week for the people of Virginia.

“Well, it has been a difficult week, and you know if you look at Virginia’s history, we’re now at the 400-year anniversary. Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe,” Northam said

“Also known as slavery,” King interjected.

Context, Elsie. The Blood of Christ is not the local cuisine.

You'll have to take your complaint back to Jesus: "For my Body is food indeed, my Blood is drink indeed."

Context, Elsie.

Source; Mrs. Don-O...

This dispatch, straight from Jerusalem's church leaders (Catholic, you know), is as follows:

ACTS 15:22-29
22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:

The apostles and elders, your brothers,

To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia:

   Greetings.

24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.

   Farewell.

The context is that the Apostolic Council in the Acts of the Apostles was talking about dead animals.

They were not talking about the precious,life-giving Blood of Jesus Christ Our Lord, which we are are bidden to drink in John 6, and in the Gospel accounts recording the His words on the night before He died.

“I guess it’s a distinction that i don’t see as important.”

I’m not aware of any American histories that use Spanish colonies as their starting point. They begin with Jamestown and Plymouth.

I don’t see how the “starting point” for American history matters, but that is probably because I was not talking about the first American slaves, I was talking about the first slaves in what became America.

I don’t particularly count the original settlements when I discuss what “America” is responsible for — it’s not like Jamestown was part of the state of Virginia when it was first founded. But I don’t reject the concept, so if someone wants to blame “America” for slaves in Jamestown, I’m not going to argue with them.

But South Carolina and Florida are definitely part of America, and the first slaves on that land were spanish.

So if we talk about the “history of slavery” in America, the slaves that were part of the settlements of Spain count — some of their descendants were our slaves, it’s not like we drove out the entire population of those states and re-populated them.

Nope.

Jesus had every drop of blood He'd ever have in His body at that time.

There was NOTHING blood-like in the wine they drank.

And there STILL isn't today.

You just *knew* I had "blood" on my Speed Concordance!

1 Corinthians 10:16
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

1 Corinthians 11:25
In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood . This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

1 Corinthians 11:27
Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

All about Communion, all about eating and drinking, all about blood.

All about Communion, all about eating and drinking, all about blood.

Let me help you:

1 Corinthians 10:16
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

1 Corinthians 11:25
In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

1 Corinthians 11:27
Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

Now let's highlight other words:

1 Corinthians 10:16

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

1 Corinthians 11:25
In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

1 Corinthians 11:27
Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

What supper??

Why PASSOVER; of course!     A once a year meal!!

I'm going to take a JEWISH inderstanding of what Jesus said during a PASSOVER meal,

instead of a Roman one:  https://jewsforjesus.org/publications/newsletter/newsletter-mar-2002/the-mystery-of-the-passover-cup/

You idea (which I've never heard before) that they did this just once a year is unsupported by evidence.

They were not just observing this sacred "the breaking of the bread" once a year in Acts 2! It says they "devoted" themselves to the "breaking of the bread" every day intheir house churches. (If you want to object that this was just eating bread at home, why would it be listed with their religious practices as something they were "devoted to," along with prayers and Temple?) Or in Corinthians, which I cited before, which does not even hint that this is restricted to Passover.

And the early Church continued on even after the Temple was destroyed, meeting once a week for this Eucharistia, this "the breaking of the bread." as Justin Martyr describes in the Second Century (First Apologia, written 150 AD).

You idea (which I've never heard before) that they did this just once a year is unsupported by evidence.

You MIGHT try reading the bible.

Here's where it started...

 Mark 14:12-16   (HCSB)

12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrifice the Passover lamb, His disciples asked Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare the Passover so You may eat it?”
13 So He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him. 14 Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room for Me to eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there.” 16 So the disciples went out, entered the city, and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover .

Luke 22:7-13   (HCSB)

7 Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it.”
9 “Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked Him.
10 “Listen,” He said to them, “when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. 11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Make the preparations there.”
13 So they went and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

...and here is how it went down...

Luke 22:19–20
19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

Matthew 26:26–28
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Mark 14:22–24
22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

And just what is this?  The yearly Passover where the Jews REMEMBER the salvation of the Lord.

...and here is what Paul added later...

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter!

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.
33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.
And when I come I will give further directions.

So; just what happened between the Gospels yearly Passover that Jesus partook in, and Paul's description of meals that were entirely different??
