Northam Calls Slaves ‘Indentured Servants from Africa’

"Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort," Northam said

Embattled Virginia Governor, Ralph Northam (D-VA), referred to people that came to America as slaves from Africa as “indentured servants from Africa” during an interview with CBS News’ Gayle King on Sunday.

Northam sat down with King for his first interview since the Virginian-Pilot published a photo from Northam’s medical school yearbook showing “two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the same page as the governor.”

King asked Northam where he would like to begin, pointing out that it had been a difficult week for the people of Virginia.

“Well, it has been a difficult week, and you know if you look at Virginia’s history, we’re now at the 400-year anniversary. Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe,” Northam said

“Also known as slavery,” King interjected.

The huge difference is that the Africans didn’t volunteer for indentured servitude.

He obviously thinks it means the same thing as “slaves.” Cut him a break!

No Republican would survive 24 hours having uttered such an absurdity.

The first “boatload” were slaves who were pirated from a spanish slave ship, and brought to virginia and sold.

They were not the first slaves in virginia either, but history is not “our” strong suit.

This is only partially correct; the blacks had not voluntarily signed on, they were actually pirated from a slave ship.

Virginia had no active slave trade, but the black angolans were used to barter for provisions.

There are questions about whether the Virginian’s who were part of this trade saw the men as “slaves”, or even as “black”. But from the Angolan perspective, they were slaves, forcibly removed from their country.

They simply were less oppressed, having been “rescued” by the pirates and relocated to a slightly more hospitable group of people than where they were being taken.

They also weren’t the first blacks to be forcibly brought to this country, or to virginia.

being “treated like” is not the same as “being”.

They did not sign up for it; they were forced into the situation, which made them slaves. That they only were slaves for a period of time makes them less oppressed, but not free.

Alright. Let’s not jump into the stupidity game alongside the race-obsessed Dems.

History is not clear on the specifics of the Africans arriving in Virginia in 1619. And their were plenty of indentured servants arriving among the white folks.

1. It is NOT the merits of what Northam did or didn’t do.
2. It IS the media’s reaction to what Northam did or didn’t do.

Let’s not get distracted.
And let’s not forget that Northam is a baby butcher. As is the entire Democratic Party and all our neighbors who vote for them.

On FR, we can argue about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

The sound of the guns is over on Twitter. The Lefties on Twitter have a mean IQ of 85. I like to keep it simple for them. ;-)

Whether Northam is "technically correct" or not, this fact is indisputable:

From a political standpoint, he is DUMBER than your proverbial "Box of Rocks". He is the walking-talking-breathing example of an individual that Bugs Bunny once described thusly:

The arrivals in 1619 were not sold as “slaves” but as indentured servants which was slavery for a usually 7 year period and could be extended if the servant ran away or was caught up was caught up in some other infraction but it was not officially slavery.

Agreed. Trying to diffentiate to the average TV viewer between an indentured servant and a slave is a non starter. I’m just glad and relieved he’s a democrat. In fact, I’m thrilled. All my leftist coworkers are speechless since they usually have fun skewering republicans.

One of my great-grandmothers came over here from Rheinpfalz in 1870 on an indenture contract to an undertaker.

I don't know much about it, but the story is that after working at the funeral home without pay, just room and board (how many years I do not know) she absconded with the man she loved --- a wine and beer-barrel maker, (also from Rhineland-Palatinate) and they went to another state and got married.

Don't know why she was never caught. I'm pretty sure that legally she could have been dragged back to her employer or imprisoned.

It has all the elements of a happy story, though. True love, a thrilling escape, and beer.

And in fact he never freed a slave in the North.

In fact, President Lincoln put his full political weight behind the passage and ratification of the 13th amendment. It was one of his very highest priorities in his second term - even personally signed it even though that is not a requirement. That amendment abolished slavery in the entire United States, including the slave states that had not joined the Confederacy.

Whigs were the party from which the Republicans arose. John Tyler, 10th US President and member of the Confederate Congress, had been a Whig. As had John C Calhoun, maybe the most significant Antebellum statesman in the country.

Uh, no, that is not even close to being true. The Republican Party did not arise from the Whig Party - completely distinct organizations. Former Whigs were just one of many groups that joined to form the new Republican Party - another major group was also the former Free Soil party members. The party was indeed founded primarily on the abolitionist movement despite your comments to the contrary.

John Tyler was a party hopper - a long time Democrat that was hardly ever a loyal Whig and certainly never, ever a Republican...his worst political battles as President were with other Whigs who even tried to impeach him - in fact he was expelled from the Whig Party and he endorsed a Democrat to succeed him as President. John C. Calhoun died before the Republican Party was ever formed and was in fact a Democrat and only briefly associated with the Whig Party when his former Nullifiers associated with it. There is nothing that even remotely links either of these men to the Republican Party.

Have a couple of relatives (they were brothers) who came to the colonies in the late 1600's as indentured servants... The contract was for 5-years, although it appears as if they only spent 3-years before becoming free...

By the mid-1700's the family & descendants had built an entire town in MA and were considered, at that time, to be almost wealthy...

I appreciate the ping to your corrections.

Even if his history had been accurate, the employment of several minor players as examples of political sway in favor of slavery interposed as being a rebuke of the statement that Democrats were the defenders of the institution amount to nothing more than a straw man argument.

It’s like saying “you can’t put all the blame on the bear for wrecking the beehive because there were some ants, a skunk and a couple of squirrels grabbing pieces of honeycomb too.”
