WASHINGTON — A divided Supreme Court stopped Louisiana from enforcing new regulations on abortion clinics in a test of the conservative court’s views on abortion rights.

The justices said by a 5-4 vote late Thursday that they will not allow the state to put into effect a law that requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.

Her staff, like most justices, do quire a bit of research and writing the actual opinions of the justices.

Call it Deep Scotus. The power is really on their staffs. You see whoever is on there are the ones doing a lot of the research and writing.

there should be a mechanism where the state could question how the vote took place.

No, their staffs can submit theirnpositions on behalf of the justice. They write them for most of the justices anyway.

Makes you not want Thomas/Alito to retire. Alito is 70.

Ginsburg doesn’t need to vote, her clerks do it for her just like they have for years, that’s why it never mattered when she slept through hearings.

I’m not convinced of that.

It’s a theory that’s out there, but I haven’t seen anything that can back up the premise, other than his off center opinions.

Look, these justice appointments are a crap shoot. Look at Sandra Day O’Connor.

Some of these folks look good on paper, and then they blow up in your face.

IMO < Trump needs two or three more justice appointments to the SCOTUS before we can be reasonably certain to be safe on issues.

I went to the 9th circuit on my whistle blower case. The judges voted 2-1 against me. One of the judges cited something that they had wrongfully reversed in chronological order. My attorney pointed out the error. The judge seemed confused. His clerk sat there and said nothing. The judges said, that’s all folks. I lost and my attorney said, the clerk wrote it and he won’t admit the error. Only recourse go to the USSC and i don’t bother.

Mother Theresa was right. No other issue comes close to defining who we are as a culture. Murderers.

Certiorari may not be granted. The LA law will remain stayed. It is unlikely that John the Butcher will vote to hear the case, in which case, the law is Kaput.

Democrats don’t need to worry.

John Roberts is the new Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

RBG can retire now. Or is it democrats that can retire her now?

Trump needs to get at least 2 more SCOTUS nominations in order to get a new conservative majority Supreme Court.

“Hes a compromised justice.”

If that is truly the case, it affects far more than the decisions he renders on cases; he has much to say on what cases will even be heard, or rather, not heard....

Want to see how he votes when the NY or Illinois new abortion laws come before the Court. These laws allow the killing of viable fetuses who are actually being born. Both statutes violate the “viability” criteria the Court used as its excuse to allow the wholesale killing. If Roberts votes to uphold those laws then he is yet another curse on the Bush legacy.

No. It’s 4 Demons & John the Butcher. When RBG joins Hitler & Himmler, it will be 3 Demons & John the Butcher.

Amy Coney Barrett would give us 5 good justices.

The Roberts pick was a real screw-up.

That goes back to another huge screw up... The election of G.W. Bush. I know, I know, we didn't really have any choice and I voted for him too, twice. But his legacy is some pretty lousy policies and he left us with this asshat Roberts.

Exactly. RBG has been out of the loop for years, either because of health issues or unwillingness to think, and the clerks could simply call it in by picking the most “progressive” stance on any issue.
