I have to believe it’s on several ships. I think I remember reading that some Russian ships had gone to port in Venezuela.

You are right, sorry. I was trying to write out a thousand million - $1000,000,000, don't know how I let myself just write a million out instead. I think it needs to be written out more.

For example, a trillion is 1,000,000,000,000 and can buy roughly 23 thousand tons of gold according to the figures in this story. 23,000 tons of solid gold. People's eyes would pop if they thought of it that way.

Perhaps Maduro is planning on skipping the country and taking the gold with him for his own persona stash.

Doubtful. Venezuela is in hock up to its eyeballs to Russia and China. This is probably being moved to Moscow or Beijing as security for the outstanding loans. Otherwise Maduro loses his only two "allies" with any influence.

I was lucky enough to go to a brand-new middle school in the late '60s. It had a long hall that connected the classrooms (in three "houses") to the common parts of the school (the gym, cafeteria, pool, etc).

Someone's dad who worked in the computer field printed out a million periods on fan-fold computer paper, and the principal had it put up along the wall; I'm sure it was printed by an IBM 1403 chain printer. A little quick math shows that at 120 columns per line and 60 lines per page, the printout would have been 126 feet long. A little quick photogrammetry on a Google Maps image of the school gives an estimate of 139 feet for the total length of the hall, so it would have worked.

Anyway, I've never forgotten that illustration of how big a million is, and am thankful for the school administration for having put it up back then.

By the way, I happen to remember that the entire school cost $2.2M in 1968 money.

23,000 tons of solid gold.

Which is only about 13% of the estimated total known supply of gold out there.

If someone tells you there is nearly a billion dollars worth of gold on a plane....better search the ships and cargo trucks.

It’s like a capitalist’s fall of Saigon.
Gotta get the gold out before the collapse.

That's a great illustration. I'm a big fan of making an analogy for these unfathomable quantities. for example, I read a book by Bill Bryson called "A Brief History of Nearly Everything" (excellent book, by the way) and he had a chapter on the solar system. He used the following to describe the size of the solar system:

Most schoolroom charts show the planets coming one after the other at neighborly intervals—the outer giants actually cast shadows over each other in many illustrations—but this is a necessary deceit to get them all on the same piece of paper. Neptune in reality isn’t just a little bit beyond Jupiter, it’s way beyond Jupiter—five times farther from Jupiter than Jupiter is from us, so far out that it receives only 3 percent as much sunlight as Jupiter.

Such are the distances, in fact, that it isn’t possible, in any practical terms, to draw the solar system to scale. Even if you added lots of fold-out pages to your textbooks or used a really long sheet of poster paper, you wouldn’t come close. On a diagram of the solar system to scale, with Earth reduced to about the diameter of a pea, Jupiter would be over a thousand feet away and Pluto would be a mile and a half distant (and about the size of a bacterium, so you wouldn’t be able to see it anyway).

He’s getting the hell out of Dodge and robbing the bank beforehand.

Fortunately, he can not take the oil.

He can not take the military

They should kill him today

A pool in a Middle School??

Yup. Olympic-sized.

I remember sneaking in and watching them use some heavier-than-air gas to leak test it. We started attending classes before the pool was finished.

The school was designed and built before the first Arab oil price shock, back when gas cost about 35 cents per gallon, and a nice new house in a suburb cost $30K. The war in Vietnam was going big-time, and The Strawberry Alarm Clock was on the radio.

Cash - dollars, euros, swiss francs. Also gold bullion, about 1 billion dollars worth. Wonder where that came from? It was interesting and perhaps related that the first thing the new Treasury secretary did upon appointment by the Trump administration, was visit Ft. Knox.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

That's what I'm thinking.

After Putin get's his "cut" Maduro will be protected there and live in luxury.

20 tons is 20 tons. What’s the payload capacity of a plane like that?

About 250,000 pounds of cargo. Quite a bit more if not taking on a full load of fuel, so 400,000 pounds is possible.

***************
It can carry upwards of 200,000 lbs. depending upon how much range you want out of it. 40,000 lbs. is nothing for a 777 freighter.

That’s what I figured. 800 or 900 million dollars in gold is trivial on a plane like that. Gold is amazingly compact and valuable.

The fake news talking head idiots on the stupid box were talking about gold some years back and detracted it at one point “it’s really heavy!” as if this somehow poses some sort of insurmountable logistical problem or something, I mean just forget it, right? LOL.

Most people could carry around their entire net worth in terms of gold coin in their front pockets and nobody would ever notice.
