Private military contractors who do secret missions for Russia flew into Venezuela in the past few days to beef up security for President Nicolas Maduro.
Russia, which has backed Maduro’s socialist government to the tune of billions of dollars, this week promised to stand by him after opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself president with Washington’s endorsement.
Yevgeny Shabayev, leader of a local chapter of a paramilitary group of Cossacks with ties to Russian military contractors, said he had heard the number of Russian contractors in Venezuela may be about 400.
Shabayev said the contingent flew to Venezuela at the start of this week, a day or two before opposition protests started.
The contractors’ task in Venezuela was to protect Maduro from any attempt by opposition sympathizers in his own security forces to detain him, Shabayev said.
“Our people are there directly for his protection,” he said.
One of the two anonymous Russian sources, who is close to the Wagner group and fought in foreign conflicts where it was active, said the contractors first arrived in advance of the May 2018 presidential election, but another group arrived “recently.”

Not too long ago, there was a report that Maduro was letting Russia bring in middles.
Those contractors may end up like the Swiss Guard of Louis XVI.
I would hope they have an evacuation plan in the event things go south...

Contractor’s have been brought and can be brought, not a perfect protection setup.
Mercenaries often won't fight to the last. KGB might.
It’s a private company. But. There are too many Western and Russian pols and military who are still looking through cold war tinted glasses.
It is time to ditch NATO and realign our alliances.
I could see that happening with a Marxist president in the US. Already Mueller’s FBI is hiring muslims whose mosques are known to be foreign government sponsored.... which of course is illegal since there is a reason we repressed the Anglicans in 1777 and told them to erase the prayer to the King.... but in America those praying to the Khalif or sponsored by foreign state islamic religions get to run for congress.
