For residents of St. Louis, Missouri and Washington D.C. commuting to work surrounded by mountains of snow, it’s essential that they leave home equipped with an accurate weather forecast. Yet, politics is rearing its ugly head and preventing Americans from getting the information they need to make safe travel choices. During the shutdown, the National Weather Service (NWS) is forcing Americans to undertake DIY forecasting. Even though the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, which oversees the NWS) has claimed that much of “operations are in excepted status and therefore remain in place to provide forecasts and warnings to protect lives and property,” compromised activities are already leaving millions in the lurch.

Uh, what? I looked a few minutes ago at our local NWS link and it's working just fine. Besides, does the author have a buddy that works for the weather channel? Perhaps jimmy cantore? In any case, it seems their success rate at forecasting ain't that good.

Let me see, it is winter in the northern hemisphere so how should I dress for today, swim suit or snow suit? Very difficult choice. Whatever did those people living back in the 1800s do without accurate (!) forecasting. I bet they were not planting tomatoes in January but what do I know.

The old Farmer’s Almanac was TWC of the day and about as accurate as you’d expect.

Private weather service? Let’s see....just offhand there’s Weather Underground, Weather.com, The Weather Channel, the service that the founder of Weather Underground started, which is generally more accurate than the govt service. There are more that I can’t think of just now.

Universal Weather is another one, not for general public. mainly used for general aviation and specific corporate accounts for planning and DR.

There are some modeling and analog sites that are not available to private contract meteorologists. It’s not stopping them from doing their job, but. it is making it harder.

This writer is an idiot. NWS forecasts are much more accurate than private forecasts.

I prefer the Mexican weather gals...

Have no idea whether they are accurate or not, nor do I care what the temp is in Juarez, but they sure beat the National Weather Service any day, be it rainy, sunny, hot or cold...
