Phillips joined the Marine Corps, serving in the Vietnam War as a ‘Recon Ranger’ and Infantryman.[8][9][10][11][12][13] This is contentious claim, since the last combat troops left Vietnam in 1971, while Nathan served in the U.S. military from 1972 to 1976

Right, because the Marines don't have either of those. A Ranger is an Army job. No one else even has any kind of ranger in their name, unless the Navy has some kind of guy who runs their laser rangefinders. A Marine from his time period would be called a Recon Marine, as part of Force Recon. Which was killed by Marsoc in the early 2000s, but the Marines are bringing back now. He probably got the term from the

'Infantryman' is, again, more of an Army term. A Marine 'infantryman' would call themselves a rifleman or mortarman or something like that.

Odd that the combat troops were gone after 1971, but my Dad (USAF) was killed in Vietnam in 1972...

Granted Marine recon went to Army Ranger school to get their jump wings. I doubt many real Marines called themselves Marine Recon Ranger. Marines and Army were like oil and water and inter service rivalries were deep. I’m sure FR has a few actual VN vet Gyrenes that can inform.
