Politicians always plan these trips to include a brief “business” meeting or two stuck in between the dinners, parties, and hazardous beach duty. The meetings provide the legal justification for sticking the taxpayers with the bill.

If they were planning to fly commercially, then there would have been at least several hundred people OUTSIDE the White House who would have known about their travel plans.

Most people don't read past the headline on these articles so they didn't see that part and don't know that Pelosi is claiming her safety was compromised by the President canceling the flight because in doing so he said she was going to visit the troops and therefore her alternate plan to fly commercial would mean she'd be at risk with everyone knowing where she was headed. The joke being, as you pointed out, that she would fly commercial anywhere, let alone to Afghanistan.

No worries. Nancy has walls to protect her. You can bet if the military had been included in this government shutdown, Nancy would not have been visiting the troops in Afghanistan. But we would have been hearing lots more sob stories.
