As the press lost credibility and was forced to downsize they became more dependent on editors with great contacts into 'free information gathering'... a replacement for hired paid newsroom staff.
Those free sources included democrat war rooms that PAID people to talk then handed 'packets of news stories on - even doing the research that showed if more obviously self serving stories were included that more of the 'other' stories in the packet would be published (knowing editors liked to anguish over choices so they could fool themselves into thinking they weren't selling out)...
The result?
Disgruntled people in 'intelligence services' and the manipulative in the Democrat party took control of news content.
Those groups created the death bargain - "news and insider info" in exchange for papers being able to dump journalists... A process that created less trust from the subscriber and viewers and more dependence on corrupt elite forces.
In short a government controlled press where the press voluntarily gave up their ability to report honestly.

And...Bill Arkin resigned from NBC today with a rather revealing opus.

I truly do not GAF what ME countries do to their citizens at this point. Americans have bigger problems closer to home to worry about.
The rest of the planet is just going to have to sort itself out.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/02/media/william-arkin-departs-nbc-news/index.html "And yet,” he wrote, “I'm alarmed at how quick NBC is to mechanically argue the contrary, to be in favor of policies that just spell more conflict and more war.”
Staffers at NBC might object to that line pointing out that the network doesn't take an institutional position in favor of any policy. But Arkin is describing the impression he takes away from the news coverage and commentary...
Arkin's right on this point... the press sides with insider government ‘elites’ to the determent of the American people - too bad he only sees it in this one area... when it's an across the board phenomenon...

Politico ran a gushing headline that read, "Jamal Khashoggi: The Free Thinker Whose Murder Shook the World." Time magazine named him one of "the Guardians," the journalistic muckrakers who became its 2018 Person of the Year. Our press is sooooooo gullible...
