A lot of people say they would love to live in Tahiti or wherever. But when they look at the costs and logistics involved, they figure out pretty quick that they’re better off where they are.

Lot of gut reaction attacking here. I have been contemplating moving to another country for about 2 years. Will probably do so. Some facts for the ill informed.

Moving to another country does not have to have anything to do with patriotism. However, it can have a lot to do with cost of living.

When moving to another country, you do NOT have to give up your US citizenship, especially if you are not seeking citizenship in the new country.

You usually have to show you have a long term stable income above a certain level to move into another country, because you will not qualify for any government assistance.

Most countries do not allow you to get a job in the new country, however, if you have a current job that you can do remotely, that is perfectly fine. Both I and Mrs Rainman already have agreements from our employers to work from wherever we want.

Once you move to a country, and have a utility bill in your name, you can often get the same pricing as locals at the stores, instead of "gringo" pricing. As an example, in Mexico this represents a significant cost reduction … usually around 1/4 to 1/3 the gringo price.

Your insurance probably will not work in another country, but I have found Dr's charge less than you would pay for just the co-pay in the US, as the full charge for the procedure.

A lot of popular destinations have entire communities for ex-pats. They are usually gated, have 24/7 security, and cost about the same as an equivalent home in Seattle or San Fran. If you want to live on the cheap however, don't aim for beachfront … go inland a mile, and be willing to do away with some modern conveniences, and you can often find a place for 1/10th the price … or even less.

If you chose a place like Belize, you don't have to learn another language … English is the official language … the they use US Currency.
